Sickle Cell Anemia

Disease that affects a protein in red blood cells, hemoglobin

The Gene and Disease Sickle Cell is Carried on

Sickle Cell disease is carried on chromosome 11 and the HBB gene. The HBB gene controls the Hemoglobin protein, which helps carry oxygen in the red blood cells. A normal blood cell that is infected with sickle cell makes it where oxygen can not enter the cell and move it to other parts of the body giving the sickle like shape (hints the name).

Carriers and Inheritance of the Sickle Cell Disease

Both parents must have the recessive sickle cell gene for the child to still only have a slight chance of getting the disease (>25%). The carriers of the sickle cell disease have to have ancestors from Africa or southern Europe and it still has to go through the family being passed on.

Population of the U.S. with Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell is most common in African American with about .00289% of the population being born with this disease. Native Americans are second most prone to being born with it with about .000362. Asians with .0000761. Hispanic with .0000528, and finally Whites with .0000172.

Symptoms that Show Signs of Sickle Cell

The main symptoms of the sickle cell anemia is painful swelling of the hands and feet (dactylitis), fatigue or fussiness from the anemia, and a yellowish color to the skin (jaundice) and/or the whites of the eyes turning a a soft yellow color (icteris) caused when a large number of cells lose to the sickle cell anemia.

Cure and Research for Sickle Cell

The temporary cure for sickle cell disease will be to keep the patient on bed rest and filter their blood with the same blood type that is clean. While the patient on bed rest the doctor(s) will give them penicillin to keep the disease from getting to the spleen.
