Eagles' News Brief

September 19- 23

I am pleased to share that thanks to Ms. Gavin, we were awarded a $5,000.00 grant from Truist Bank over the summer! This grant is helping us cover the cost of our Conscious Discipline Training.

Additionally, representatives from Truist will be on campus this Tuesday morning, 9/20, to read an age-appropriate financial literacy-based story to each classroom.

As a part of their visit, Truist is paying for EVERY student to have an ice cream cup from the cafeteria during lunch on 9/20.

Fabric Scraps & Supplies Needed!

As many of you know, our creative staff found a way to include ALL 4th & 5th grade students in "clubs" of their choice on Fridays- during the school day! I am SUPER EXCITED about the continuation of this work and the passion our staff put into it! The children LOVE choosing their clubs and engaging in a topic they are interested in each week!

This year, Ms. Wrighton is offering a FASHION DESIGN CLUB! To ensure that the students have the best possible experience, she's asking for help from our school community. If you are able to, please donate old clothing or fabric (pre-washed), tulle, buttons, ribbons, lace, scissors, fabric tape, fabric glue, fabric dye, mannequins, body forms, etc...

Thank you so much for your support!

Sight Word Blocks Community Project!

We are looking at options for adding academic supports into our environment (playgrounds, stair cases, etc...) Think sight words, repeated addition, multiplication facts, etc...While it will take some time, research, and funding to bring this all to life, I am very excited about coming together as a community to get started with the project pictured here!

We'll need scrap wood donations, vinyl letters or stencils, outdoor paint, paint brushes, zip ties and many hands! We could also use help from someone who is willing to apply for a Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grant or a Home Depot Retool Your School Grant on our behalf.

Please let Ms. Curtis (rcurtis@wcpss.net) know if you're interested, and thank you in advance for your support! Supplies and materials can be dropped off in the main office.

Partner's Read Volunteers Needed!

We are preparing to begin a new program called Partners Read with select 1st grade students!

*The gist of the program is that we will select 10 emerging readers who regularly get to school early / on time. On Fridays 5 volunteers will come in and spend 15 minutes reading 1-on-1 with two different students between 8 & 8:30. During each session the students will choose a brand-new book - which will then be read to them. These new books get to go home with the children every Friday! By the end of the year the participants will have taken home 20 brand new books! (10 weeks in fall & 10 weeks in spring)

Learn more: https://www.wakeed.org/programs/early-literacy/

Ideally, we would like to have volunteers who can commit to all ten weeks.

Volunteers must complete the WCPSS Volunteer Registration Process and will train once per school year with WakeEd Partnership. Volunteer training will occur in September (date to come), and the program will begin Friday, October 7th.

Please let Mrs. Curtis (rcurtis@wcpss.net) know if you are interested in and available to volunteer for this wonderful program!
