A Message From the Principal
Dear Morse Street Families,
It has been a busy couple of weeks here at Morse Street as usual! Here are some Literacy and Social Studies highlights from each of our grade levels. In Pre-k classrooms students are telling oral stories that then become scripts for story acting. Students bring each other's characters to life, as they act out part of the stories, building language and comprehension skills that support their development as readers and writers. Some students will then further work on those stories by making a book and retelling their stories in pictures. Students are often seen acting these out during their free time.
Our Kindergarten learners have just finished their ‘Word Scientist’ phonics unit, and graduated with a ceremony and received lab coats! In this unit Kindergarten learners build on their knowledge of letters and sounds, as well as their sight word vocabulary for both reading and writing. This unit grows knowledge as children search for letters and sounds in different contexts. At the end of the unit they study patterns in words that can help them build new words. They worked hard knowing that they were earning their lab coats!
First grade are in the middle of their country study unit. Each class studies a different country and explores the location, languages spoken, food eaten and different traditions as well as other interesting facts. Each class then travels from class to class where children can teach their peers everything they have learned. The journey begins with passport stamping at passport control, and then on their way they go. They will be traveling all week, so ask your first graders what they have learned on their travels.
Our Second graders have been reading and writing non-fiction books. They have picked a topic they can become experts on, and have researched and then written books on their topic. They shared their books with our kindergarten so that they had an audience in mind, were given feedback, and then they revised based on what their audience shared. As a culmination of the unit, they had the choice to write a chapter book, make a podcast, or a video. Ask your second graders what they chose to do and what topic they were writing on.
As we approach the holidays we want to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and safe holiday season and we look forward to seeing you all in the New year,
Warmly,
Julie Nickerson
