PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Sunflower families! I am excited to be starting my second year of service as your principal. Labor Day weekend is the “unofficial” end of summer. Students, staff, and families have settled into school routines and are ready for a fantastic year. On that note, it always amazes me how much children grow and mature during summer vacation.
Sunflower’s teaching and support staff believe an environment of collaboration is the best way to reach our goals. This is the epitome of our mission and vision statements:
Mission Statement: TOGETHER, empowering each individual student to reach their unique potential.
Vision Statement: At Sunflower Elementary, we will collaborate with students, families, and colleagues to create an innovative, engaging, enjoyable learning environment where dreams are nurtured, exploration and discovery are encouraged, and individual academic achievements are realized. We will celebrate the accomplishments of each student as they leave our school as healthy, confident, academically prepared, and self-directed learners who are ready to meet the challenges of the future.
I look forward to working in partnership with you, your child, and our staff to realize your personal learning goals for your child(ren) and our school. Feel free to contact us if you have questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jason Jones
Notes from the Office
Sunflower Cafe: Lunch Guests
Parents and family members are welcome to have lunch with their student(s). Guests need to check in at the office, wear a visitor badge, and stay in the cafeteria until returning to the office to check out. Please sit at the table designated for guests. Enjoy your meal and conversation with your child (other students should not be invited to join you).
Walking to the Classroom in the Morning
In order to make the start of our day a happy time for everyone, we really need your help. Ultimately, our goal is to have each and every child in grades PreK-4 become independent with the beginning-of-the-day routines within the first several weeks of school. This also helps build a sense of responsibility, independence and accomplishment.
The teacher's responsibility in the morning is greeting the students and preparing them for the day. You can request that the teacher call you at their plan time or set up a conference, but please allow them to focus on the students at this time.
Our “Hug and Kiss Zone” in the commons area next to the office is where you can give your child a hug and kiss goodbye and allow him/her to walk to the classroom. Should you need to walk your student down to their classroom, please check in with the office first and pick up a visitor badge. For safety reasons, we also ask that you sign out at the office on or before 8:25am so that teachers can start their day right after the bell rings. This is an important part of our district's safe plan put in place back in May 2018.
