Scan the QR Code
Point the camera feature of your phone at a QR code and it will probably offer you an easy one-touch path to a website. (Most phones have this app or you can add it to your phone, so you do not need to type in the URL address.) The QR code pictured here takes you to www.SMARTFamilyLiteracy.org. Scroll down to the yellow button for "Hurricane Tips" and you can find a list of items to pack for an emergency!
Top Three Things to Pack?
What are three items to pack when you evacuate for a possible hurricane? We choose headlamps, high protein food in foil packages, and a waterproof cell phone bag. Remember to individualize your emergency evacuation with prescription medications or eyeglasses and the baby's favorite comfort toy. For more ideas, visit here: https://gov.texas.gov/hurricane.
Before the Storm
Read books before the storm happens. While you're together in a safe and happy place, you can help children build the language that will help later in an emergency. "Dark" and "flood" and "damage" seem less scary when we know characters in a book who shared the experiences. Houston-Galveston area parents can prepare themselves with no-hype weather forecasts from Space City Weather. Sign up for their app in English or Spanish at https://spacecityweather.com/.
