This year's theme is: Happy Campers at HFE

Think Summer Camp, campers, Air Stream Campers, fun, making S'more memories...etc.

Maybe add Eddie the Eagle or Mrs. Nash as a camp counselor!

Have fun with it!

Big picture

Student Government (4th & 5th Grade Only):

Student Government is back! Please go to this website to learn more. Please note that all 4th and 5th grade students will participate in an information session, so they should be familiar with the process to apply.

Best Buddies (3rd Grade - 5th Grade Students Only)

Best Buddies is a program that encourages one to one relationships between students with intellectual and developmental delays (IDD) and their peers. Students will be committing to one day a week during team time (7:10-7:40). During this time, they will be assisting teachers of a special education class during breakfast and arrival. The club will also have a holiday party and end of year party. This opportunity helps students to learn about differences, inclusion, and the importance of friendships. The program will begin the week of October 2nd. Applications are available at the front desk and should be submitted to Ms. Julia once complete. The committee will select 4 students from each grade level (3-5) to kick-off this program. Please reach out to Mrs. A with any questions - aronowtiza@fultonschools.org.

No Place For Hate (4th Grade Students Only):

HFE is currently accepting No Place For Hate applications from 4th grade students. If your 4th grade student is interested in applying, please have them fill out an application here. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 29th. Please note that it is a two-year commitment (4th & 5th grade). Six fourth grade students will be selected to be a part of the coalition, which also consists of eight 5th grade students. Monthly meetings will be held the second Friday of the month during Team Time (7:40-8:10). Please reach out to Mrs. A with any questions (aronowitza@fultonschools.org). Below you will find more information on No Place for Hate (https://www.noplaceforhate.org/).

Birthday Celebration Info

This year, birthdays will be celebrated in the classroom again. You may order from the cafeteria, or bring in small store bought treats chosen from the approved list on the HFE website. All of 4th grade will be celebrating birthdays on Fridays only. For example, if your child has a birthday Monday, August 7th through Sunday, August 13th, the classroom celebration will be Friday, August 11th. Parents are not allowed to join, unfortunately.

Participate Remote Days

Having our students in school each and every day is a priority for us here at HFE. We want to share with you information about Participate Remote Days

Approved Participate Remote Learning Days are a new addition to the Fulton County attendance policy as of last year. Each student is able to take 5 approved remote learning days each semester. These can be used when you have a special family event, required travel, etc. These days must be requested at least 5 days in advance and require principal's approval. These days may not be used on testing days. Here is how the process works:

1. Parent notifies student's homeroom teacher of wanting to take remote learning days.

2. Teacher will provide link for parents to fill out requesting remote learning days. •https://forms.office.com/r/0pQ4yzqebM

2. Teachers will provide work that must be completed within 5 days of the absence

Please reach out to Mrs. Dunagan with any questions.

Student Success Skills

  1. “Fulton County Schools and HFE strive to use research-based best practices that foster student success, both academically and emotionally. To better help our students learn these essential social-emotional skills, Fulton County Schools and Rethink Ed have partnered to provide parents with access to an online platform full of lessons, discussions and more! Parents can access this online program through creating your own Rethink Ed Parent Account. Please see the attached document to see how to set up your account and learn more about our SEL program!”

How can I find a “Good Fit” book for my child?

A quick method for estimating whether your child has chosen books they can read is the Ten-Finger Rule.

Here’s how it works:
Ask your child to read a page or two aloud from the book.

If your child misses only one word out of ten on average- meaning that they can read at least 90 percent of the words- the book is the right level of difficulty.

If your child misses one word out of five on average, the book is too difficult.

This is my 9th year teaching 4th grade at HFE. (Man, time flies when you’re having fun!!) I moved from Savannah where I previously taught 5th grade and art! All together this is my 11th year teaching and I love it. My husband, Mike and I, have 2 dogs named Douglas and Klaus, a hedgehog named Larry, and a tortoise named Alvin who is our class pet! I love, love, LOVE nature and the outdoors, kayaking and hiking… Oh, and traveling and exploring to learn new things! I am always ready to go on an ADVENTURE, whether it’s in my backyard or somewhere in the world I’ve never been.

I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you and let you get to know me as well. This school year is sure to be an exciting journey as we learn more about each other and explore the fourth-grade curriculum.
