Lowell Health Office Highlights
Affordable Care Act
For those who need to renew their healthcare coverage through the Affordable Care Act, please remember that the open enrollment period goes from 11/1/2017 - 12/15/2017. This is a smaller window of time for renewal than in previous years. The site can be accessed online at: https://www.healthcare.gov/get-coverage/
Staying Healthy
As the cold and flu season approaches, remember to protect your health and your family’s health by:
Washing our hands frequently. It is an ideal time to review with your child the importance of handwashing, proper handwashing and when to wash their hands. Keeping hands away from your face also reduces the chance of illness.
Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water.
Getting an adequate amount of sleep.
Eating the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables, which are high in vitamins.
Covering your mouth when coughing with either a disposable tissue or your sleeve.
Remember stress and fatigue can affect your body’s ability to fight infections.
The yearly flu immunization is recommended to keep you and those around you healthy.
Deciding when to keep your child home is not always an easy decision. When a child is truly sick, it is important they stay home in the care of an adult to get well and to limit the spread of germs at school. Below are some guidelines to help you decide when to keep your child home from school.
Skin rash from an unidentified cause that has not been evaluated by a physician. Please note that open sores should be covered until healed or evaluated by a physician.
Oral temperature of 100o F or greater. A student with such a fever should remain home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal without the aid of fever-reducing medication.
Experiencing nausea, diarrhea, and/or vomiting. Students should remain home until symptom-free for 24 hours without the use of medication.
Complaining of severe, persistent pain.
Showing signs of an upper respiratory infection (cold symptoms) or any other illness serious enough to interfere with the student’s ability to learn.
Signs of conjunctivitis (“pink eye”) present with symptoms such as secretions from one or both eyes, itching, and crusts on eyelids.
Please call the attendance line (630-682-2086) to notify the school when your child is staying home. When reporting an absence, please indicate the reason for the absence. If due to illness or a communicable disease, please report symptoms including whether your child has a fever, cough, or sore throat or report the diagnosis.
If you are not sure whether to send your child to school, you may call the school nurse for consultation. If you’re still in doubt, call or visit your physician.
Injuries/Recess
If your child has an injury which keeps them out of PE class, please make sure to send the doctor’s note to the Health Office. Be aware that if your child is not able to participate in PE class, they are also unable to participate in recess. We thank you for not double parking on Illinois, in the car line, and in the surrounding neighborhood during arrival and dismissal to keep the children safe. We also thank all families for crossing Illinois Street at the corner. Safety for the children is our top priority!

Lowell Traffic Patterns & Pets
New to Lowell or need a refresher on the traffic patterns? Click here for a map and reminders. As a reminder, all vehicle traffic will be on Willow Street. Children who walk to school may enter on President Street, through the main entrance on Illinois Street or the Sun Porch entrance off of the field on the west side of the school.
We also ask that you not bring pets on school property before school, after school or to events during the school day. While many of us have loving pets that are truly family members, we do have students and adults with fears and allergies. Likewise, we have also witnessed calm family pets react unpredictably when startled, even with other pets or people they know. We thank you for your understanding of this.
Thank you for helping us in our top priority of keeping your children safe!
