Mathews Weekly
February 26, 2018
From Grace
As part of STEAM Day, we took the upper grades students to see Dream Big at the Bob Bullock IMAX. The film is inspirational and, along with conversations with our vertical team on the kind of programming being offered at middle and high school, renewed our commitment to providing opportunities for our students to think critically and create, to communicate and problem-solve. Mathews has been leading the charge for Making and projects and I love that we no longer stop and tell the kids, "Now we're going to do a Maker activity," but incorporate the mindset and tools into our instruction. This was clearly evident on STEAM Day when I was blown away by some of our students' solutions to extreme weather and so proud of how they tackled the design challenge in such a meaningful way. We've seen our country's young people rise up to challenges beyond their years this last week and I continue to be proud of our students and confident in their ability to rise to any challenge presented to them. Let's continue to build strong, resilient, and kind thinkers together!
There are only two weeks of school left before spring break and we're going to make the most of them! This week there is a weather drill planned, field trips will be taken, and we'll wrap up the week with our annual Track and Field Day! Help is always appreciated and we ask that all of our Kinder and 6th Grade families provide snacks for the event. I'm attaching information about the day directly below this message. If you have questions about the day, please reach out to Coach Outlaw. Thanks!
In other news, today is the first day for the AISD Student Art Show at the Performing Arts Center! This year, we have a selection of kindergarten art work, inspired by Picasso, on display. Every year I'm astounded at the talent of all of our student artists and encourage everyone to attend. The art is on display from 4:00-6:00 pm today or from 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday–Friday and noon–4 p.m. Saturday–Sunday February 26-March 9.
As we wrap up these two weeks and when we return from spring break, please remember to follow our safety guidelines to help keep everyone safe - both during drop off and pick up and throughout the course of the day. Check out the section below for important information and reminders, including a link to review our Federal Report Card and be on the lookout for some happy incentives to get 100% of our students to register online and for information about International Festival! :)
Enjoy the rest of the weekend and we'll see everyone tomorrow morning!

Easy Ways to Support our School
Did you know that you can support Mathews while you shop for groceries, supplies, and goods?
Mathews participates in the Box Tops for Education program which gives us $0.10 for each Box Top collected and turned in. Many of the items you already purchase have Box Tops on them; simply cut out the Box Tops and drop them off in the pink boxes on the window sills by the cafeteria. In November, we made almost $25.00. While that may not seem like a lot, it can add up quickly and we appreciate all the help. If you'd like to learn more about this program, this link has helpful information: https://www.boxtops4education.com/about
Arrival Update and Dismissal
Dismissal: We have more buses/vans picking up our kiddos this year. Please do not park in the front between 2:00 and 3:15 pm, even if waiting for dismissal. It is important that we leave the front lane open for buses and childcare vans. Thank you!!
