Campus Parent Communication - August 26, 2020

In-Person Learning is Almost Here!

We are anxiously awaiting the return of our students! It's getting closer and closer, and we are beside ourselves with excitement!! With COVID comes some changes to the normal way of life at Vaughan. The information provided below aligns with Allen ISD's COVID-19 prevention, mitigation and response procedure. In an effort to keep our kids safe and healthy, Vaughan Elementary will follow all Allen ISD Guidelines. We wanted to highlight how these procedures will look at our campus. I wanted to give you information ahead of time in case you have questions about any of this and to prepare you for our first day of In-Person Learning on September 2.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if I can assist you in any way.

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

Our arrival and dismissal procedures will be changing to be in compliance with social distancing and increased safety for our Vaughan families. Please see details below.

Arrival

  • Students in Grades 4-6 will be required to enter the building with a face covering.
  • New this year - We are not allowing parents to park in the school parking lot and walk up to the door to drop off their child. Please remember that this is in an effort to adhere to keeping everyone safe.
  • More specifics below...

Car Riders

  • Car Riders may be dropped off either at the front of the building or the side by the gym.
  • Please remain in your vehicle when dropping your student off by car.
  • Staff members will be outside to ensure your child(ren) arrive into our building safely.
  • It is important to note that we will need for your student to exit their car upon stopping to ensure our line keeps moving. Please do not wait to drive your student up to the door they are entering.
  • Parents may not park in the school parking lot and walk up to the door to drop off their child. They must utilize the carpool line, or leave their students by the time they reach the crossing guard closest to the building.

  • All students that ride bikes, scooters, etc. are asked to walk their mode of transportation as soon as they get to the crossing guard.
  • Parents will not be allowed to walk students up to the doors.

Eating Breakfast at Vaughan

  • Breakfast will begin at 7:30 AM.
  • To ensure your student does not miss instructional time, we ask that you arrive as close to 7:30 AM as possible to give them enough time to eat prior to class beginning.

Dismissal

  • Please see the map for a visual representation
  • Dismissal will look similar to last year, with the exception of where our students will wait. To ensure students are social distancing, we will spread them out across more areas. This will not impact where you pick up.
  • Car tags will be sent home on Sept. 2nd. Please make a home made sign to use for the first day. Please include the student's name, grade, and teacher.
  • See specifics below...

Car Riders

  • K-3 (and older siblings) will dismiss on the gym side of the building.
  • 4-6 will dismiss at the front of the building.

  • Students will adhere to social distancing protocols while on campus.

Parent Walk Up

  • K-3 (and older sibling) parent pick up will take place as in previous years.
  • Parents will wait by the tree on the gym side of the building and wait for their students.

School Supplies

Technology

  • If you were issued a device from the school, we are asking that you send the device to school everyday. The students will be using this device during the school day and it will be sent back home each night. In addition, please ensure these are charged regularly.

  • If you did not check out a school device, there will be a device at the school for them to use during the school day. These will be assigned to each child so they will be the only one coming in contact with it.

  • Please make sure your child knows their login and password. If they do not, we may have to reset their password here at school.

Water Bottles

At this time, our water fountains have been disabled. Students will need to bring a water bottle each day. These can be refilled from our bottle filler, but we are not providing them a bottle to do so.

For K-1 Students - Extra Change of Clothes

We highly encourage students in grades K-1 to bring an additional change of clothes to keep in their backpack.

Other Important Details

Handwashing

  • The district has placed hand sanitizer in every classroom, at the entrances, and throughout common spaces.
  • Students are expected to use the hand sanitizer as they enter the room and exit the room. We have signs that say "Foam In, Foam Out" as reminders.
  • Each teacher will also schedule hand washing breaks throughout the day.

Learning Environments

  • Teachers will arrange the desks to maximize space between students.
  • We will use visual aids to illustrate appropriate spacing and traffic flow throughout the building.
  • We are also limiting the mixing between cohort groups as much as possible. However if your child receives any special services ( SPED, ELL, DT, SSI, etc.), they could be mixed with other students to meet their instructional needs.
  • We will be limiting the number of students that participate in small group instruction in the classroom, and the tables will be wiped down and disinfected in between each group.

Specials

  • Students will attend their special classes like normal.
  • In music, students will be required to wear a mask while singing.
  • In art, they will bring their personal supplies with them to use. (We have purchased each child a plastic supply box to transport these to and from ART)
  • If there is an activity where they must use shared supplies in Art, these will be cleaned in between uses.

Lunch

  • At this time we will be able to fit all of our in person learners in the cafeteria or the MPR for lunch. However, this could change at anytime depending on numbers of kids participating with in-person learning.
  • Students will be spaced apart at tables, and seats will be clearly marked for students.
  • Single-serve trays and utensils will be used each day.
  • There will not be any lunch visitors permitted at this time.
  • No outside food may be delivered or dropped off. If your student forgets their lunch, they will need to buy lunch from the cafeteria that day.

Recess

  • Students will participate in recess for 30 minutes each day.
  • Classes will not be able to "mix" with other cohorts at recess.
  • We have 3 to 4 different "stations" that our classes will be able to access for recess. Each team will decide where they are going for each day of the week.
  • We have also purchased additional recess equipment such as balls, jump ropes, hula hoops, etc. that students will be able to use during recess time.
  • The high touch areas of the playground equipment will be sanitized between class usage.
  • No extra items from home should be brought for recess.
  • Students do not have to wear masks outdoors during recess.
  • Students will use hand sanitizer prior to exiting the building, as well as when they enter the building.

Visitors

We are restricting building access to students and staff only. While it breaks our heart to even say this, it's currently necessary with COVID. Words cannot express how much we value your partnership, the hours of volunteer time you put into our school, and seeing your faces for lunch with your student. We will miss it terribly this year but are hoping that this will end soon and we can resume normal campus visitor policies quickly.

Deliveries/Dropping Off Items

  • Please know that we cannot accept any deliveries during this time.

  • If your child has left their lunch at home, they will have the opportunity to purchase a lunch at school.

  • This also includes books, forgotten homework, backpacks, etc.

  • The only exceptions will be for medical needs such as medication, glasses, hearing devices, etc.

Student Birthdays

As much as we want to help you celebrate your child’s birthday, at this time we are not allowed to have students bring anything in from home to pass out to the class. This includes food items, pencils, bookmarks, etc…

Face Coverings

  • All students should bring a mask covering to school and wear when entering the building.
  • All students in grades 4 – 6 are required to wear a face covering.
  • Students in grades K-3 are highly encouraged to bring a face covering to be worn in community areas and during transition times (i.e. hallways).
  • All staff members will wear a face covering.
