MES Family Newsletter
We are moving right along through May! SOL testing started this week with students in grades 3-5 taking the Reading SOL. SOL testing will continue next week. Please refer to the May calendar included in this newsletter with specifics. Students' SOL score reports will be mailed home with report cards on June 9th. Please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or me with any questions. A huge thank you goes to Coach Roach, our testing coordinator, for her organization and hard work in making testing run so smoothly at MES!
This week, we celebrated all of our teachers and staff, as well as Nurse Marie as Wednesday was School Nurse Appreciation Day! Our PTO has spoiled us with special breakfasts, treats, and prizes! Today, we had a delicious meal from Crossroads Cafe. Thanks to all of our families for your support of our school. Our teachers and staff work tirelessly as a team to support every child academically, socially, and behaviorally. The work is not easy but they make it look effortless and one week of appreciation isn't enough. We are so blessed with so many amazing people at MES!
As a reminder, report cards will be mailed home to all students on June 8th! The additional teacher workdays in June allow teachers more time to complete report cards following the last day of school.
As we look toward the 23-24 school year, we have several grade-level changes. We are excited to share that Ms. Howard will be teaching second grade along with Ms. Eppard. Ms. Hope Warner will be going back to first grade after looping up to second grade with her students this year.
As we enter one of the busiest times of the school year, we are also starting to prepare for next year! This means that we start having grade-level discussions about student groupings. It is important to note that these groups are not set in stone as students can move, teachers can move, numbers can fluctuate, etc. To group our students, we look at student data including but not limited to literacy, academic strengths, and weaknesses, social development, etc. We obviously can't entertain parent requests for specific teachers for their child(ren). However, we welcome your input on your child's strengths, interests, preferences, and needs! If you'd like to provide that input, please complete the form linked here if you haven't already!
Have a great weekend!
Sports Physical Night Information
Dear Parents,
Sentara Orthopedics and Sports Medicine will be offering the annual sports physical night on Thursday, May 18, 2023. Physicals will be given from 4:30pm to 6pm - if a student checks in by 6 their physical will be completed. This event will be held at Sentara Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center, 2509 Pleasant Run Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22801. East Rockingham athletics will be accepting a $10 donation for each ERHS and EMS physical. The $10 donation will go towards the ERHS athletic training budget for the 2023-2024 school year. All students eligible to participate in a sport at East Rockingham High School for the 2023-2024 school year are invited to join - this does include current 7th graders that will be in 8th grade next year. Students must have a VHSL physical form completely filled out and signed by a parent or guardian prior to coming for a physical. If a physical form is missing any of the three parent signatures or is not completely filled out, the physician exam will not be completed. All students attending the physical date are asked to wear shorts in order to make the orthopedic screening easier for the physicians and students. Parents are welcome and encouraged to accompany their child through the process of the physicals. These sports physicals are intended for athletic participation and should not replace a yearly physical exam done by a student’s primary care physician.
Attached is a copy of the VHSL form that will need to be filled out before screening will begin.
Please email our athletic trainer, Lacey Shifflett, at lshifflet01@rockingham.k12.va.us with any questions or concerns regarding this event.
