LAKEWOOD CITY SCHOOLS
2020 - 2021 REOPENING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
GENERAL INFORMATION
We understand this is a big decision that has caused stress and pressure to families. The goal of our short timeline was to allow our groupings and staffing arrangements to be made. The learning model survey needs to be returned by July 27, 2020.
Will I have the option of changing my child's learning model at any point during the year?
If you choose the eLearning LKWD model for your child, you are choosing this model for a semester. (Aug. - Dec.) If we will be continuing our models into our second semester, we will send out another survey to gather information from our families to see who will be utilizing eLearning January - June.
If I opt for eLearning LKWD model, will my child continue with that model in the event the District moves to 100% remote under the Purple Level?
Yes, your child would remain with the eLearning LKWD instructional model. We will not be able to accommodate moving back and forth between models.
Will we need to still wear face coverings and social distance if we return to school under the Yellow Level 1?
Yes. Face coverings are required for all staff and students.
Will special services such as EL, special education, and gifted support be provided in the learning models?
Yes. We will continue to provide support to students in our EL, special education, and gifted programs. Lakewood teachers will work with families to ensure support is in place.
Will my child be provided with a Chromebook for the 2020-2021 school year?
Yes, students in grades 1-12, including those choosing the eLearning LKWD model, will be provided with Chromebooks. Kindergarteners will receive iPads
What will the students do in a Partial Learning model when they are home?
When the school or district is on the Partial Learning model, students will be assigned homework to complete prior to coming back to school.
Will before and aftercare options be available?
At this time, the district is working with community partners to see how we could help with assisting families in need of before and aftercare. More information will be available soon.
Will there be accommodations available for students that are in the Gifted program, but choosing the eLearning LKWD model?
Our Coordinator of Gifted services will be in touch when we begin school to develop a plan to address your students needs.
SAFETY AND CLEANING
We will use CDC recommended disinfectants to clean, and we will increase the frequency of cleaning, especially in high traffic areas. Our cleaning protocols include wiping of surfaces in common spaces throughout the school day, disinfecting classrooms in an ongoing manner, and implementing a targeted cleaning routine in the evening.
Why is LCSD requiring ALL students, except for preschoolers, to wear face covering? Will students have to wear face coverings all day, or will there be opportunities for face coverings to be taken off?
Currently, Cuyahoga County mandates all people wear a face covering unless you are under six years of age. It is recommended that everyone wear a face covering to help slow the spread of the virus. In an effort to further protect our staff and students, we believe it is necessary for face coverings to be worn. We recommend that families begin working on face covering training if your student will or may have difficulty wearing them at school. We will schedule face covering breaks for students throughout the day.
What kind of face coverings are required?
Face coverings need to be worn over your nose, mouth, and chin at the same time. Families will be required to provide a face covering for their students. Students who forget to bring their own will be provided a disposable face covering. Face shields are acceptable only if the student wears a mask underneath it.
Will there be a health assessment of students entering the school building each day?
Yes. Each day parents will need to assess their children before school for the following symptoms:
- Fever or Chills
- Difficulty Breathing or Shortness of Breath
- Congestion
- Runny Nose
- Cough
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Loss of Taste or Smell
- Sore throat
- Nausea/Vomiting/Diarrhea
- Muscle or Body Aches
Students should stay home if they are experiencing any symptoms listed above or if they have a temperature of 100 degrees or higher. School staff may perform spot checks for a fever while students enter the building.
Parents should notify the school nurse or school office immediately if someone in their household has tested positive for COVID-19.
How has the district adjusted airflow within the buildings?
The Operations Department made sure all LCSD school and office buildings have or will have an increase in the standard percentage of outdoor air exchanges. Building automation controls enable us to increase the frequency of air exchanges by exhausting a variable percentage of "return air" to the outside.
Although not the most efficient means of cooling/heating during hot/cold outside air temperatures, we can pull in more outside air to condition before the air handling units discharge the conditioned air into rooms. The majority of returning air could be exhausted out of the buildings.
What is the policy if someone in a building tests positive for COVID-19?
The staff member or parent/guardian of a student who tests positive for COVID-19 would follow the recommended CDC guidelines and contact their doctor, who would then contact the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. The county health department, with the school district's assistance, would then initiate contact tracing and make recommendations for self-isolation/quarantine depending on the level of exposure to the positive person.
MEALS AND RECESS
Yes. Our Nutrition Department will operate a Grab & Go Meal program like we did in the spring. Families in need will have the opportunity to receive meals for their school age students. More details will be shared closer to the start of the school.
How will lunch look in the PARTIAL model?
Our goal is to keep the school experience as normal as possible for our students. Right now we are developing plans that will allow lunch to take place in the cafeteria and extended spaces throughout the buildings. We will implement social distancing during the lunch periods. Special health and safety protocols will be implemented for lunch purchasing, clean up, and entering/exiting the lunch space.
How will recess look in the PARTIAL model?
We know recess is very important and we are working to create safe ways to allow for play outside, which could include rotation stations to allow for social distancing on playground equipment. We will continue to work with the Cuyahoga County Health Department to outline our plan and get approval.
