Fourth Grade Field Trip
Our Fourth Grade students traveled to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Arts on Wednesday. Mr. Codilla, EL art teacher, prepared this opportunity for our students. Many of these students were visiting the Nelson-Atkins Museum for their first time. Thank you, Mr. Codilla!
A special THANKS to our English Landing PTA for paying for English Landing Field Trips. Park Hill pays for a portion ($5.00) for each child and our PTA pays the remaining cost. The Nelson-Atkins Museum Field Trip entrance cost was free. In the afternoon each student participated in a 3D paper sculpture workshop. This 3D paper sculpture workshop was facilitated by the Nelson-Atkins Museum staff and there was a fee attached for our eagles to participate in this experience. Again, thanks to our English Landing PTA!

An Annual PTA Tradition: English Landing Staff Wish Tree
English Landing Staff Wish Tree Link
Dear English Landing Families,
With Fall conferences coming up, the English Landing PTA is asking our Eagles families to help make a difference in your child's classroom, specials areas and more this school year by helping stock them with essential items needed throughout the year.
Participation is easy! Each grade-level classroom, specials teacher and other EL staff have created wish lists with the items they most need. Just scroll down through the list below until you find your child's teacher. You can sign up right next to the items you would like to donate in the sign up genius list. Items can be brought to the classroom directly either by your child or during your parent/teacher conference or can be brought to the office labeled for the teacher they are intended for at any time during the drive period.
We are asking that all items be donated by Friday, November 2nd.
Don't forget to check out the lists from the specials teachers, counselors, recess staff, office staff and other important EL members that your child sees every week. There is also a category for supplies for students in need.
Let's show our Eagles teachers and staff some love this Fall and make sure we help keep their classrooms well-stocked! Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.
Angela Ensminger,
PTA Wish Tree Chairperson

Eagles Learn Zones of Regulation
A tool that English Landing staff members use is called the Zones of Regulation. This language helps students express what they are feeling and also guides them in regulating their feelings throughout the school day. Teaching children how to identify when they are feeling at a YELLOW zone helps us provide additional assistance before this feeling moves to the RED zone.
Repeat: PTA Halloween Parties
On October 31, 2018, the English Landing PTA will be hosting a Halloween Party in grade level classrooms from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. English Landing students will be allowed to wear a costume to school all day. We want to encourage students to wear a costume or a simplified version of their costume to school on this day instead of bringing a costume to school as changing into a costume isn’t included into our plans on this day.
For the safety of our eagles, we do need to follow Park Hill School Board Policy JFCA in the selection of this costume.
Here are some key points:
- Disruptive or offensive costumes are not allowed. (Example: No Gore and No Blood)
- Costume masks and face paint are prohibited.
- Shoes must be worn.
- Accessories such as a toy weapon, pretend weapon, or prop should not be sent with your child’s costume.
All costumes worn need to model what Dr. Roe would consider a G Rating so please be careful in your selection. We want this day to allow our eagles to show their creativity while remembering we are still in a school setting. If you are joining us for the PTA Halloween Party, please do not arrive to English Landing before 1:45pm. This FUN day is a day of learning for us. We will wait until just before the party begins to wrap up teaching and learning. The back parking lot is available for parking since the front parking lot is so small. The exterior door at the end of the fourth grade hallway will be available for building entrance between 1:45pm and 2:45pm.
Reminder: The KCMO Public Works Department has designated Klamm Drive directly in front of English Landing as a no-parking zone, and the KCMO Police Department and Platte County Sherriff’s Department closely patrol this area.
Reminder: Exterior Doors are LOCKED During the School Day
Repeat: Spring 2018 Missouri MAP Scores
The timeline for Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to release the Spring 2018 Missouri MAP student scores has been further delayed. Last spring, the new ELA and Mathematics assessments were administered. As this was the first year of administration of the new assessments, the standard-setting process was expected to be completed during the summer. Unfortunately , this process was not completed creating a delay. Once this process is complete, performance-level cut scores for assessments will be proposed to the State Board of Education. Following State Board of Education approval of performance levels, school districts and charter schools will receive assessment results. It is now expected this process will be completed soon with scores being released in November.
REMINDER: Veterans Day
English Landing would like to honor our Veterans in a different manner this year. During the month of November we would like to invite our family members who have served or are currently serving to participate in the career share visits within the classroom.
Thank you for your service! We hope to see our Veterans and those currently serving during Career Share Visit.

Career Share: Schedule a Classroom Visit!
Parental involvement in your child’s classroom is one of the leading factors in raising self-esteem and academic achievement. This can go beyond attendance at Parent and Teacher Conferences or attending family nights at English Landing. We want to see you at a Career Share Classroom Visit!
Each of our English Landing families are unique ---with their own talents. Career Share is an opportunity for every child at English Landing to showcase THEIR family to their classmates. Career Share is an amazing opportunity for you to visit our classroom. Your involvement will not only make their day, but provide another opportunity for you to partner with English Landing and your child’s education.
Right now, this Career Share Sign Up is for classroom visits in October, November, and December. Second Semester Career Share Sign Up times will be shared in December. Your classroom teacher will be sending the link to sign up.
Our goal is to have EVERY student have a member(s) of their family come share in our classroom about their job and careers. It truly means the world to our Eagles.

Park Hill Redistricting Overview
Redistricting Overview
In preparation for the opening of Hopewell Elementary and Walden Middle School for the 2019-2020 school year, and in order to balance our very different high school enrollments, we will be redistricting all of our attendance boundaries, from elementary through high school. Redistricting will help us continue to be one of the best districts around by protecting our low class sizes and making sure we can balance our resources.
The redistricting committee meetings will be open to the public, if you want to observe them. We will also host public input meetings and provide an online feedback tool to get your thoughts on the committee's ideas before the Board sets the new attendance areas. Watch for more information about those opportunities later in the fall. The Board plans to make its decision in December.
Have YOU joined our English Landing PTA? Please consider doing this for the 2018-2019 school year. A PTA membership is $8.00 or a Business membership is $50.00.
To join the English Landing PTA, please click here to complete the PTA Membership Form.

Celebrating Birthdays at English Landing!
Celebrating Student Birthdays: (Park Hill Parent/Student Handbook pages 37-38):
We are happy to celebrate student birthdays and half birthdays (if your child has a summer birthday) at English Landing! To protect the health and safety of our students, families may bring pre-packaged treats to school to share with classmates. In order to address any known allergy concerns, a label listing ingredients should be affixed to the package. Due to allergies and other food intolerances, please consult with your classroom teacher before the pre-packaged treats are brought to school. As a healthier alternative, Park Hill Food Service offers a variety of nutritious treats that may be purchased.
At English Landing we need your HELP! Many birthday treats arrive at the beginning of the school day which provides us time to review the class list regarding food allergies or food intolerances, however, many other birthday treats arrive during lunch and often right at the same time the treat needs to be distributed to students. PLEASE plan on arriving earlier for lunch (at least 15 minutes) to give us time to check the pre-packaged treat ingredients with the students in the classroom who have food allergies or food intolerances. Our school nurse, Mrs. Kimbrel, and office staff, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Wood, or Mrs. Scott, will help with this process so when the lunchroom staff teachers distribute the treat in the cafeteria, additional steps have been taken to ensure we are protecting the health and safety of our eagles.
