Jefferson's Influences That Are Still Present.
- Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which gave us the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We now celebrate our freedom every year on July 4th.
- He used his retirement to improve education in Virginia, also being called the "father of the University of Virginia (created in March 1825)."
- Jefferson also wrote the Virginia Law For Religious Freedom, stating both freedom of conscience, and the principle of separation of church and state.
His Accomplishments.
- Jefferson's political thought became the perfect example for the Constitution.
- He proposed a school system of 3 steps: Elementary school, Colleges (equivalent to high schools of today) and a State University.
- Bought the Louisiana Purchase on April 30th, 1803.
-He was alarmed by the prospect of having powerful and aggressive French as neighbors.
-Sent James Monroe to join Robert Livingston, in Paris, to negotiate the purchase of the land that would secure access to important ports for America.
- Sent out Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the Northwest territory to observe transcontinental and natural resources.
-Jefferson asked Congress to fund the expedition that would cross the Louisiana territory to proceed to the Pacific.

Jefferson wrote this to make it known that we all have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Thomas Jefferson's Grave
Thomas Jefferson wanted his grave to say, "Here was buried Thomas Jefferson. Author of the Declaration of Independence, of American Independence of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia."
