Snap Chat with Lisa Center
I'm Lisa Senter and I have been at Cedar Park for 19 years! I taught 6th-grade humanities until 2010, when I became the MYP coordinator half time. I taught humanities half time that first year and since then my .5 teaching position has been filled with mainly Design (I did teach 7th Summa humanities one year). For the last three years I have taught 6-8 Design on A days, and fulfilled the demands of coordinator on B days.
How and why did you become a teacher?
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. When I was about 7, my dad brought home a surplus desk from his work; I set it up in the basement along with four "student" desks and made all the neighborhood kids play school. I was the teacher, of course! I took the long route through college, but I eventually graduated when I was 27 and was hired right away by Beaverton School District.
Cats or dogs or neither?
Growing up, we were a cat only family. I got my first (and still only) dog in 2007. Wilson is a white and tan, long-haired Chihuahua, and he's pretty adorable. Dogs. Definitely dogs.
How do your students describe you?
One word is strict. I run a pretty tight ship, but they would also say funny. I have high expectations, but when kids meet my expectations (they always do) they get to see my sense of humor (which is very dry and I also love word play). One of my favorite jokes I used to tell when my sixth graders studied the ancient Maya goes like this: The Mayan high priest to the king amid the decline of their civilization: "Sir, the peasants are revolting." King: "Yes, I think they are disgusting also." And then I'd just wait. It's so fun to watch them "get it".
