A NOTE FROM OUR NURSE
Literacy
As we wrap up our literacy focus on main idea and supporting details, we have learned how to infer the main idea and details in both fiction and non-fiction texts. Learners are doing a great job with this! Below you will find an image that you can use when reading with your child at home to continue practicing this skill.
Next week we will continue reading non-fiction texts to 'ask and answer such questions as who, what, when, where, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.' (RI 2.1)
Other things you can work on:
Identifying and using nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs - This is a skill that gets practiced every week during mentor sentences.
Cursive- We have all officially begun teaching cursive! You can assist your child with this by helping them practice their lowercase letters at home!
Resources for Home
Math
All learners have been working hard learning addition and subtraction. Please work with your child on the progression of adding and subtracting. Start by adding/subtracting within 100 and moving towards 1000. They also need to be able to know when they will need to regroup.
Current standards:
2.NBT.5: I can add and subtract two-digit numbers. (ex. 34+78 72-38)
2.NBT.6: I can add up to four 2-digit numbers. (ex. 23+45+89+17)
2.NBT.B.7 I can use strategies to add numbers within 1000 and know when to regroup. (ex. 367+892)
2.NBT.B.7 I can use strategies to subtract numbers within 1000 and know when to borrow. (ex. 612-398)
Other things you can work on:
Fact Fluency- Use flash cards, Front Row, or you can ask your child various single digit math facts
Money- knowing the value of each coin, learning to add them up
Time- to the nearest 5 minutes or minute (to the minute would be EVEN better to prepare them for 3rd!)
Below you will find some parent tips to support 2nd grade math and some FUN ideas you can do as a family.
Friday, February 2nd is the 100th Day of 2nd Grade!
We would love to have our learners dress up like they are 100 years old!

ATTENTION KINDERGARTEN, C1, AND C2!
Hoops for Heart kicks off this week at PRES! Last year, we raised over $5000 for the American Heart Association and came in 14th out of over 100 schools in our region! This year, we want to do even better. So, C-K, C1, and C2 parents are asked to register their C-K, C1, or C2 Learner online at heart.org/jump. Donations will be done online so the sooner your child registers, the sooner they can start collecting donations and earning prizes!
