# What's New In C2

## Literacy

As we wrap up our literacy focus on main idea and supporting details, we have learned how to infer the main idea and details in both fiction and non-fiction texts. Learners are doing a great job with this! Below you will find an image that you can use when reading with your child at home to continue practicing this skill.

Next week we will continue reading non-fiction texts to 'ask and answer such questions as who, what, when, where, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.' (RI 2.1)

Other things you can work on:

Identifying and using nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs - This is a skill that gets practiced every week during mentor sentences.

Cursive- We have all officially begun teaching cursive! You can assist your child with this by helping them practice their lowercase letters at home!

## Math

All learners have been working hard learning addition and subtraction. Please work with your child on the progression of adding and subtracting. Start by adding/subtracting within 100 and moving towards 1000. They also need to be able to know when they will need to regroup.

Current standards:

2.NBT.5: I can add and subtract two-digit numbers. (ex. 34+78 72-38)

2.NBT.6: I can add up to four 2-digit numbers. (ex. 23+45+89+17)

2.NBT.B.7 I can use strategies to add numbers within 1000 and know when to regroup. (ex. 367+892)

2.NBT.B.7 I can use strategies to subtract numbers within 1000 and know when to borrow. (ex. 612-398)

Other things you can work on:

Fact Fluency- Use flash cards, Front Row, or you can ask your child various single digit math facts

Money- knowing the value of each coin, learning to add them up

Time- to the nearest 5 minutes or minute (to the minute would be EVEN better to prepare them for 3rd!)

Below you will find some parent tips to support 2nd grade math and some FUN ideas you can do as a family.

## Friday, February 2nd is the 100th Day of 2nd Grade!

We would love to have our learners dress up like they are 100 years old!

(optional)

## Field Trip Fun

We enjoyed our field trip to the Rosa Parks Museum and Alabama Department of Archives. Traveling back and time was fun.

Reading is our thing in the BarnWhites!! Each day we take the time to let some learner's read aloud a book of choice to their peers, and asks questions to check for understanding.

## Lee Family

A Trip Down to History Lane

Thank you Mrs. Stone for teaching us about the ecosystem!

Sharing is Caring

## Field Trip Fun!

Please take a look at things we got to do on our field trip. We got to travel back in time to learn the history of segregation. We also got to visit and learn more about Rosa Parks and what she had to go through. After, we went to the Dept. of Archives and learned a little bit of Alabama's history.

## Staying Healthy!

We have learned how important it is to wash our hands, but got to take a look up close this morning while we experimented with "Germ glow." The lotion allows you to see the germs on your hands with a UV light... Needless to say we are continuing to wash our hands EVEN better in hopes of staying flu free! :)

## Steindorff Family

We had GREAT field trip to the Rosa Parks Museum and the Alabama Archives Museum!

## American Symbols Play Practice

C2 has been working hard practicing for our American Symbols Play. If your child has a part please make sure they are practicing their lines! This is an exciting opportunity for us as a community and we can't wait for our final production date on February 22nd.

## Does Your Child Have A Part In The Play?

Parents, if your child has a part in the play you are responsible for creating a costume! This is where your child gets to be creative! We would like all costumes turned in by February 16th.

This year, we want to do even better. So, C-K, C1, and C2 parents are asked to register their C-K, C1, or C2 Learner online at heart.org/jump. Donations will be done online so the sooner your child registers, the sooner they can start collecting donations and earning prizes!
