Curriculum Updates and Activities
Weekly Math Update
Students enjoyed our measurement lessons where they did many hands-on activities using different units.
This week, we began a unit on repeated addition as a precursor to multiplication. We used tiles, played games, and made equations to show equal groups.
The second grade team kindly requests you to not teach multiplication facts as something to be memorized. This prevents students from reasoning out and practicing working with groups of the same number. Thank you.
Science Update
We have continued studying about forces & motion such as pushes, pulls, gravity, friction and magnetism. Students are doing experiments with toy cars to examine the impact of forces such as pushes, pulls, and friction. We balanced paper "crayfish" and other shapes with clothespins on them and will soon have activities using magnets.
Weekly Reading and Writing Update
We're loving our book clubs where we read independently and then meet in groups to have meaningful conversations about our books.
In writing, we are finishing up a second non-fiction unit and are editing and revising our pieces. Students made a cover, title page, table of contents, and used text features such as bold words.
