From the Principal...
Happy New Year! I hope your 2023 will be the best year yet!
As we begin this second semester of this school year, we put a larger emphasis on making sure students are prepared for the next stage in their educational career. For our 5th graders, that means Middle School. That's right 5th grade parents/guardians...Middle School is right around the corner. Make sure your 5th grader is registered for Middle School. Please call Mrs. Hemphill at 719-328-5800 if you have questions about how to enroll.
As an AVID school, we try to foster a strong connection between home and school. To find out more about your child(ren)'s day, when they get home from school, ask them what is "one new thing" they learned today. Ask what was their favorite part of their day. Reading together as a family, whenever possible, is another way for families to connect to what is being taught during the school day. As always, reach out to your child(ren)'s teacher if you ever have questions about what your child(ren) is learning during the day.
State Assessments are coming!
In April, students in grades 3rd-5th will be taking their state assessments called CMAS. This is required by the state to be taken by all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. 3rd and 4th grade will take three assessments in Math and three in English Language Arts. 5th grade will take three Math, three English Language Arts, and three Science.
While state assessment results to do not measure the worth of a child, their intelligence, or their ability to love others, it is what the state, district, and school uses to measure how many grade level standards they have mastered since beginning school. Please know that we encourage students to do their best, no matter what they do. We are asking that you get them to school every day, on time, so they do not have to take their test separated from their classmates. The schedule will be sent out soon!
Quarter 2 Report Cards will be sent out via your Parent Portal on Powerschool. Mrs. Hemphill, Jackson's Staff Assistant, signed ALL parents/guardians up for the Parent Portal. All you need to do now is to log on and set up your own username and password. On the portal, you can view your child(ren)'s report cards, grades, attendance, etc. We will NOT be printing report cards this quarter. If you would like more support with accessing your child(ren)'s report cards, please contact the front office. We will be happy to walk you through this process.
Jackson families are the heart and soul of this community! Thank you for being a part of what makes it so special! As always, please feel free to reach out via ClassDojo, by phone, email, or stop by if you have any questions, needs, comments, etc.!
Thank you and again, Happy New Year!

Book Giveaway
Thanks to the PTO and private donations, all students at Jackson received two free books before the Winter Break! The students had a great time choosing two books to take home. Having books available to read in the home is one of the indicators for reading success with all students – so keep on reading!
Kids Collect
I want to thank AJ in Mrs. Ferguson’s class for sharing his collection in the Media Center. Everyone enjoys seeing these fun collections!

Tech crew schedule will take place mostly during school hours with select after-school rehearsals (schedule will be sent out to selected students). The show will perform on Thursday, May 4, 2023 and after field day.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Winter can be challenging for all of us. Please remember that you do not have to spend $$$ to make memories for your children. It is tempting to just allow your children to be on technology all day. There are other alternatives (see article at the end of this post). We ALL do this at times to survive, but let's try some new things...
- Have a 1-hour tech free time each day where kids can choose to read a book, play with toys, put together a puzzle, or even take a nap.
- Walk to the Jackson Park if you live in the neighborhood and/or let the kids play on the playground at the school.
- Turn on some music and have a dance party.
- Play a family board game. (You can even find them at Goodwill).
- Paint or draw.
- Make cleaning up the house a game. First child to pick up their room/area gets to choose what is for dinner or what movie the family watches.
- There are a lot of free activities in Colorado Springs. Garden of the Gods is literally right up the street. There are a lot of fun things to do at the Visitor Center.
- Have you ever been to the Air Force Academy? It's free to get in and there is a cool visitor center as well.
- Ute Valley Park is free—right off of Centennial and Vindicator (1705 Vindicator Dr, Colorado Springs, CO 80919.)
- Red Rocks Canyon off 30th and Highway 24 has AMAZING hiking.
- The Pioneer Museum downtown is free.
- The Bear Creek Nature Center is free. Wildlife, nature trails & a variety of habitats featured at a preserve with guided tours & events.
