Gladstone High hosts regional robotics conference
On October 23, more than 200 students from across Oregon participated in FIRST Fair, a regional robotics conference at Gladstone High. The school has hosted the annual event for over a decade.
The event offered 18 classes in topics from welding, electrical control systems, and mechanical design to programming and drive trains. Due to the pandemic, students had the option of attending in-person or online.
"We worked for months with First Robotics to plan an amazing day full of STEM classes for robotics teams all over the state," said Robotics Coach Dusty Long. "We had teams come from as far away as Bend this year. I could not be more proud of Gladstone High School or our students. We were able to show why Gladstone High School is such an amazing place to work and go to school."
Gladstone students were well-represented, with participation from both the Gladstone High robotics team and middle schoolers from the Kraxberger Gearheads.
"First Robotics and the Gladstone Robotics programs are a huge community. I was able to take a safety class, welding class, and 2 programing classes," said GHS student Avery Taylor. "It was amazing to have all of these great opportunities here at Gladstone High School."
Environmental science students study biomes
Gladstone High students in Paige O'Dell's environmental science class are studying biomes, the naturally occurring communities of plants and animals that occupy a particular habitat, such as a forest, tundra, or desert. The course is for juniors and seniors, who can earn college credit from Oregon Tech [OIT].
Each student picked a specific biome to research, then presented their findings to each other. This included climate graphs for their specific biome, a list of plants and animals that live there and which are endangered, whether soil composition is good for agriculture, and whether the biome was terrestrial or aquatic.
"I thought the biome project was pretty fun and entertaining to learn about the different biomes and the. plants and animals that live there," said student Emilee Cromwell. [pictured above]
