State Testing Updates
The State Board of Education is seeking a waiver of certain requirements when it comes to CAASPP Testing. While this process is going on, we are preparing to administer the test remotely. The State is seeking to:
- Decouple state assessments from federal accountability requirements, as applicable. Instead, any data collected would be used to inform local educators, parents, and the public and align resources to student supports.
- Waive federal penalties for student testing participation rates of less than 95 percent on the state’s Smarter Balanced English language arts and math assessments.
- Extend the window by which schools must complete test administration to July 30 for both the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) and the English Language Assessments for California (ELPAC), which measures English learners’ progress toward language proficiency, as applicable.
- Waive administration of the state’s science test altogether for 2021.
Our SETL (School Educational Technology Leads) are preparing training slide decks and videos now to support the remote administration of our students in CAASPP. We will schedule a meeting in early March to review this information to allow time for sites to be trained by their SETLs. Our testing window opens 4/19 and closes 6/16. We anticipate sites being able to move through testing faster than previous years as a result of not having to coordinate schedules for laptop/device availability on sites.
Although we had hoped for a full waiver, we are optimistic that the increased flexibility and waiver of accountability will provide relief to our educators. Our goal in this spring's testing process will be to minimize instructional time being lost to the tests and to minimize the impact to teachers and students in completing the assessments.
