Wow, we are in week 6 of the term; it is really starting to fly! We have so many events in progress or on the horizon, so please make sure you are in the loop around dates and timings so that you are not caught by surprise! With just over a month of the school year left, we are noticing tiredness creeping in. It is an incredibly busy time in the lead up to Christmas, and routine and enough sleep make a big difference to how we will finish our year. Our focus at school is keeping routines tight and learning experiences as engaging as possible. We often notice our Year 6 learners starting to wobble, as they approach a big transition to their next schools. We met last week to discuss this and to outline our expectations for the rest of the year.
Another farewell is on the cards! Our beautiful Whaea Jas is off to train as a teacher. Jas has been a Learning Assistant at Chelsea for the past 2 years, and has been a massive support in so many ways, particularly with kapa haka. We are so excited for you Jas, and our hearts are happy! I think it’s clear to anyone who has seen you in action with our gorgeous tamariki that you are so suited to teaching.
I have been so impressed recently with how Up for a Challenge our learners are in so many different ways! Chelsea’s Got Talent has been underway for the past few weeks, and the confidence on display always amazes me! We have been treated to singing, dancing, talented musicians sharing their skills, magic tricks, comedians, and so much more. It is beautiful to see the talents that our kids have and how keen they are to share these. A big thanks to Sven for organising this opportunity again this year and to the Student Council, who are judging and running the event. Last year’s winner, Hayden Keane and his whānau have even donated a trophy for this year’s winner! We are so grateful.
The final of Chelsea’s Got Talent is happening this Friday at 1.30 pm in the hall. You are welcome to come along and support our learners.
We are working hard in our effortsto define what inclusion looks like at our school, and recently, some of our learners had the opportunity to go and participate in the Halberg Sports Day held at Beach Haven School. One of the big work-ons for us is inclusion in sports and P.E. for those who are differently-abled. It was great to see the adaptations that can be made so that all learners can access sports and physical activity. Charlotte M., Samara and Charlotte B. had an incredible, action-packed day.
Thanks to everyone who helped out and supported our Creepy Carnival. Despite the soggy start to the day, it cleared into a beautiful, fun-filled evening. A huge thanks to Krystal and the PTA crew, as well as the many whānau and staff members who gave up their time to help out. It seemed to be a huge success, and lots of fun was had!
The funds from this event are going towards heating our school pool, which is very exciting!
It was awesome to see so many of our kids out on the field last week at Y3-6 Athletics. Thanks to Mr Wilson and to all of the parents who came along to help us. Everyone gave it a good go, and we now have our interschool team, who will be representing us next week against our cluster schools. All the best for the Interschool event, it’s always a highlight in the sporting calendar. The introduction of a new event - wheelchair time trials was a massive hit! I was desperate for a turn, but it turns out I couldn’t squeeze myself into a youth-sized wheelchair, no matter how hard I tried! Well done to Charlotte, Samara and Mr Cropp for organising this new event.
I’m looking forward to seeing our Y0-2 learners in action next Friday!
Celebrating Diwali
Many of our whānau have recently celebrated Diwali, and this is an opportunity to share and grow our knowledge of what happens and what it means to our learners. We were lucky to have some of our Pakiaka whānau at school to teach us more about the celebration and its importance. Thanks to Nirali and Meghana, who even brought along some treats for our learners to try! We appreciate you. These opportunities to learn from each other are priceless.
Some of our learners have written about what Diwali means to them and their whānau. Please have a read of the pieces below.
