On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright made four Still, they recognized that much hard work lay ahead, especially the creation of a propulsion. The Wright brothers had invented the first successful airplane. However, the 1903 Flyer had only performed short, straight-line flights. To successfully market their invention, they had to demonstrate that it could turn and fly over more commonplace terrain than the sandy open spaces of Kitty Hawk.

- The plane had a wingspan of 40.3 feet.
- Their engine was called a piston engine; this had a total of twelve horsepower.The engine of the plane weighed 180 lb (82 kg) which made the plane weigh a total of 605 lb (274 kg).
- Their first flight using an engine was on a Thursday at 10:35 on 17 December, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.Their father partly disagreed with the brothers, he once said this, “It is impossible for men in the future to fly like birds. Flying is reserved for the angels. Do not mention that again lest you be guilty of blasphemy.”
