PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Kia ora koutou,

It certainly feels like winter is with us, although today is the shortest day and it is only 96 days until daylight saving begins.

A big HNP welcome to Harry and Kauri who have made a great start in Room 23. Well done Harry and Kauri!

A reminder that reports come out on Thursday 7th July. In week three of next term there will be Learning Conferences to disucss the report, as well as reflect on the learning goals set in Term 1. These interviews will be 15 minutes in duration.

Cameron Graham Cup

I would like to congratulate our Year 5 & 6 students for representing our school so well at the Cameron Graham cup last week. It was great to see these students displaying our school values in such a positive way. I was contacted by former HNPS Principal Mr Ian Holfford, who was most impressed with the manners of our students on the bus. Well done team!

A special thank you to Te Mata, Hereworth and Lucknow Schools for what was an excellent day of competition and comradery. It was great to see Rex Graham looking so well too. He loved seeing the students in action and presenting the cups.

Turf

After a massive fundraising effort over the past two years, supported by grants from The Lion Foundation and Eastern and Central, we are finally there. The Ian Holford turf will be replaced over the coming months. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported our fundraising events and to Jess Cranswick and Lou Harvey for their excellent work with the funding applications and Bridge Hansen for coordinating a great deal for ther school. The work is likely to take a few weeks and we will keep you posted once we have a better understanding of timeframes. Exciting stuff!

Matariki Holiday

A reminder that this Friday is a holiday. On Wednesday afternoon our Year 5 & 6 classes invite family and friends to check out some of their recent Matariki work. We look forward to seeing you there.

Next week all classes will visit the Star Dome which will be set up in the hall. A big thank you to Carla Smith for organising this for the school. What a fantastic opportunity!

We were hoping to unveil our four new values Pou this week, however due to a number of complications, this event has been put back to Friday 1st July at 2:15pm.

Have a great long weekend everyone and stay safe if you are travelling.

Ngā mihi

The Supper Club

The Supper Club is an initiative to support the provision of meals and care packages to HNPS families in need.

We have a freezer in the school hall which can store meals and baking for the school leadership team to distribute at its discretion when a family within the school community is faced with a challenge such as bereavement or sickness.

The Home and School Association would like to reach out to the school community to contribute to the Supper Club. This can be a meal or some baking (bought or homemade) to help support family mealtimes and/or school lunch boxes.

If you are time short, or not keen on cooking or baking there are loads of great local cafes and bakeries you might like to purchase something from and add to the freezer. Pies, quiche’s, soups, muffins, loaves etc would all be greatly appreciated.

If you do like to cook and/or bake, there are containers and labels beside the freezer in the hall to take home, fill, label and drop back into the freezer.

The families in need are usually nominated by someone in the school community, or a teacher and we then arrange to have the meals collected by the family or delivered to their home.

We wish to respect the privacy of families receiving these care packages so will be keeping this information confidential.

If you have any further questions or would like to nominate a family in need, please email homeandschool@hnps.school.nz

Please Collect Yummy Stickers

The Yummy sticker promotion is set to go again for 2022, time to get crunching apples and pears. Please collect stickers and cut out codes.

You can bring the sticker into each classroom or put a chart up on your fridge to collect, then bring the sheet in. You can get these off the yummy website or collect a sheet from the school office.

Last year we got some awesome sports equipment to top up the and classroom resources with all the stickers collected.

One difference this year is the Hailstone Hero apple bags. The wild spring storm in Hawkes' Bay, damaging a significant amount of The Yummy Co apple crop with hail. Although these look funny, they still taste yummy. The official cut-out is not on these bags, but you can collect the round bar-code sticker as 10 points. These are Yummy apples but branded Hailstone Heroes and available in both New World and Pak’n Save.

Collection goes until the end of Term 3 – Thanks!

Enviro Corner - Week 8

Long-tailed Bats/Pekapeka

This week our endangered organism is the Long-tailed bat. Its Maori name is Pekapeka. This bat is a mammal just like us and needs your help because it is heading for extinction.

These little bats are the size of a mouse and weigh the same as a $2 coin. You can help these bats now by learning all about them! Find out why bat mums are super mums! And why you are like a vampire bat.

Here is a quote from Greta Thunberg: “You are never too small to make a difference”

E-Waste

Don, from the environment centre joined our Discovery session bringing in e-waste for the children to tinker with. It made the children think about e-waste, what it is and what happens to it, end of life! They explored how technology has changed and evolved. Fine motor skills were challenged. What an amasing experience for our children!

Make our birds count We need your help to make a difference

Fire and Emergency Notice

We know a fire in your community can come as a shock and make people think about fire safety in their own homes. A fire can happen to anyone, so we ask you to please communicate to your tamariki two things they can do to protect them, their home and whānau in the event of a fire.

1. Check their smoke alarms are working. If they don’t have any, let us know and we can help. Either call 0800 693 473 or email Hawke’sBayDistrict-CRMTeam@fireandemergency.nz

2. Have an escape plan for anyone living in their house. They can create a plan at https://www.escapemyhouse.co.nz/
