Olympic Athlete Brings Spotlight to His Family's Small Country By Peter V.
Jordin Andrade is a track and field hurdler who will be representing Cape Verde in the upcoming Olympics. He is known for being a successful 400 meter hurdler. He won Gold in the 400 meter hurdles in 2017 at an Olympic qualifying meet in Abidjan. He placed 26th in the World Championships. He also placed 5th in the Jamaica Invitational. Jordin is placed 51st in the world for 400 meter hurdling. Jordin also made the semi-finals in the 400 meter hurdles in the Olympics in Rio, Brazil. He is a friend of my dad as well as the small nation of Cape Verde.
Recently, I had the opportunity to interview him. Here are my questions and his answers.
What was your childhood like? What interests do you have?
As a child I was just like most kids, I loved video games, they were my main interest. However, I balanced gaming with outdoor adventures with my friends. As I got older I found interest in sports, especially baseball and football and found my niche in track late in high school.
How did you first become interested in track?
As my uncle and my father were both well established track athletes, I was intimidated in living up to the expectations I held on myself. But as I tested the waters, I found the talent of hard work and the thrill of progression.
What obstacles did you have to get to the Olympics?
There were many obstacles in getting to the Olympics but the main one was getting in contact with the Cape Verdean Olympic Committee to update them that I wanted to compete for them. In the past, I competed for the USA and to change affiliations in an Olympic sport is not easy. Just a month before the selection deadline I was finally officially a Cape Verdean athlete.
How long did it take you to qualify?
I qualified the year before the Olympics at the NCAA championship.
What was your reaction the first time you did?
After I qualified it was a surreal experience because it felt as though it would never actually happen. It wasn't until I had the tickets and my uniform to Rio that I really felt that I was going to really be there. Once I actually got to the track to compete, it felt like any other track meet but I had the hope of the country pushing me to be the best I could.
When you had a chance to run for the USA or Cape Verde why did you decide on Cape Verde?
I decided to compete for Cape Verde because it was for a bigger purpose than just myself. There were plenty of USA athletes that went to the Olympics, but only a few Cape Verde athletes and my goal was to bring the country to the spotlight.
What does your typical day of training look like?
I practice 5 days a week starting at 10:00 am and finishing at 2:pm where two hours are spent on the track and two hours are spent in the weight room. Then I go to work at the airport.
Outside of the 400 hurdles, what other events do you run?
Typically, I only run the 400 hurdles because that is my best event and it is what will get me paid the most. But sometimes, you’ll find me on some relay teams and maybe a 400 in the beginning of the season just to get competitive again.
P.S. It was truly exciting to interview an Olympic athlete like Jordin Andrade.
MY YELLE JOURNEY By Makenna S.
My Yelle journey was like a chapter book.
Chapter 1 Fourth grade. In Fourth grade I had Mrs Horton and Mrs Gray for teachers. We did lots of fun activities. One of them was everytime that we went somewhere Mrs Horton would pick a ticket and if we were quiet while we were walking down to lunch or our special we would get to pick out a bouncy ball. Another one was when we did our times tables in math if we did really good we would get gummy bears. YUM!! For our field trip we went to Fenway Park. It was an hour drive, but it was fun. I learned a lot of things. For lunch we got a subway. It was so good. Fourth grade was a fun year but Fifth grade here I come.
Chapter 2 Fifth grade. In Fifth grade I had Mrs Mallon and Mrs Almeida. They were awesome, and really funny. But at the beginning of the year we had to have temporary classrooms downstairs because of Asbestos, but when we got to go to our classrooms they were amazing.A little later in the year we had a student teacher Mrs Eno. She was the best student teacher ever. We did a lot of fun things this year. One of the fun things Mrs Mallon did was having a store. She gave a few kids a week of jobs, and you would get tickets for doing your job. At the end of the two weeks, you can buy stuff with your tickets at the store. I also loved doing quizzes.I got February Student of the Month. I was so happy.I was really excited for our field trip. I had been waiting since 4th grade for it, so I was really excited. We were supposed to go to Patriots Place and eat lunch at Red Robin.
Due to the Coronavirus we could not go on our field trip. I was really sad. A day later the school announced that they would be closing for 2 weeks due to Covid19 (coronavirus). I was sad because I liked school. But when we were at home the dates kept getting pushed back farther and farther for when we would go back to school and eventually turned into no school at all. I was devastated. It was my last year of elementary school. We started having Online classes.
I will be really sad to leave the Yelle, but I will always remember it.
Thank You Ms Horton, Mrs Gray, Mrs Mallon, and Mrs Almeida for making my Yelle experience a great one. I will forever miss you.
Bye Yelle. Hello middle school…

Glasses
Salvino D’armate invented eyeglasses in 1285. He shared his invention with Alessandro Della Spina who made it public and often got credited for inventing eyeglasses. The first eyeglass frames were made of metal or bone and had lenses made of quartz. In the 14th century scientists were making “disks” for the eye. The earliest lenses were convex, they bulged outward in the middle, and they were used to correct farsightedness. In the 15th century spectacles found their way to China. In 1451 Nicholas of Cusa in Germany produced eyeglasses to aid people who were nearsighted using concave lenses that were thinner at the center and thicker at the end. The modern style of eyeglasses that would be placed over the eye and nose was invented in 1727 by a British man Edward Scarlett.
