Message from the Principal
Also, I want to take the opportunity to celebrate the work of the IHCS Team as we enter Teacher Appreciation week and Classified Appreciation Day. Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated in the first full week of May, from May 2 through May 8 in 2021, and is when teachers get the extra credit they deserve. The big day is Teacher Appreciation Day on May 5, but teachers are just so great that they get a whole week to savor our appreciation. Whether you have a teacher, know a teacher, or are a teacher, there are endless ways to give a little extra support to teachers. Additionally, the classified team is equally important and deserve recognition for the contributions they make at the school site, so this week is our chance to say thank you to instructional aides, supervision aides, food service workers, the media center clerk, the front office ladies, and the custodial team.

A screencast is a video recording of your device’s screen. A screencast is a fantastic way to create instructional videos, short “How-Tos,” and share ideas. If you are looking for a free screencasting app, you may want to try Screencastify, Screencast-O-Matic, or Flipgrid Video Shorts.
When creating a screencast, educators want to hold students’ attention and foster understanding of the material. The following tips may help you create instructional screencasts:
1. Organize Your Thoughts
By creating an outline, storyboard, or complete script will save you time in the long run. Your explanation will be more concise and clear. As teachers, we always recommend our students to create an outline. Let’s follow our sage advice.
2. Keep it Short and Sweet
You can create screencasts using free apps, such as Screencastify, Screencast-O-Matic, and Flipgrid Video Shorts, ranging from 5 minutes up to 15 minutes in length. I recommend creating a video no longer than 3 minutes. If your topic/lesson is longer, try breaking up the content into shorter videos
3. A Page from a Teacher’s Playbook
Tell them what you will tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them.
4. Organize Device
Before pressing the record button, you will want to complete some basic housekeeping to clean up your laptop desktop and close unnecessary tabs. Having an organized device is especially important if you opt to record the entire screen.
5. Minimize Distractions
In addition to fine-tuning the message you want to share, you will also need to make sure the backdrop image is tidy (if you opt to embed a Webcam thumbnail) and minimize background noise. It is probably not an ideal time to create a recording while the blender is pureeing jelly beans.
6. Practice. Practice. Practice.
Perhaps Brian Lies, NY Times bestselling children’s book author and illustrator, says it best, “Practice makes better.” Practice teaching the lesson. Practice using the screencast app. Practice using all the bells and whistles the screencast app offers.Innovative Intervention
Let’s talk about vocabulary! What does it actually mean? Vocabulary is your “bank” of words that you use to deliver a message through speaking, writing, or even listening. There are two categories of vocabulary words: social - what we use when we are speaking with friends and family; and academic vocabulary - what we use in learning concepts, like science, math concepts, and social studies. It is important to know the difference between them.
Social vocabulary is built MUCH faster than academic vocabulary. Vocabulary is important because it is the base of comprehension. Students might be able to “read” a word, but if they don’t know what the word means, the point of reading is lost. Building vocabulary skills gives students the tools they need to understand the words they are reading. Keep reading to learn about one basic vocabulary strategy you can use at home or at school.
Word of the Day
Try using a “word of the day” vocabulary intervention. Just choose one word each day. Use it as many times as you can (you can have your student/students keep a tally mark record of how many times they hear it that day), give someone a high-five any time they use the word or hear someone use the word, say the word whenever they enter the room… the possibilities are endless! This is a good way for focusing on specific words, just be sure to keep some sort of record and quick review of all of the words you have learned, so it’s not just “one-and-done, forget about it and move on.”
AVID Celebrations!
Our Middle School students are remarkable. Here are some students who have received a Shout Out Award because they are very organized. Very impressive all six of you, keep up the great work!!! Being organized and staying organized is not easy.
Can’t wait to see who is going to be selected next!!
