Saint Ambrose Family Newsletter

November 19th, 2021

From the Principal

Dear Saint Ambrose Parents,

Our 4th graders lead the charge for toy collection for Children's Hospital this week, and you delivered! We are extending the drive until Monday. Thank you for your generosity.

Next week we have a short week before the Thanksgiving holiday. As a prize for meeting our Marathon goal, on Tuesday, November 23rd, students may be out of uniform.

Tuesday is also the end of the First Trimester. Report cards will be sent home Friday, December 3.

On Wednesday, December 1, it is the Parish Day of Mercy, and our students in grades 3-8 will have an opportunity to participate in the sacrament of Reconciliation.

In other parish news, this video introduces perpetual adoration at Saint Ambrose:

Spirit Wear

I know everyone is eager to receive their spirit wear orders, and we had hoped for an earlier arrival, but unfortunately, there is a supply shortage. It is taking longer than usual to fulfill orders. We are in contact with them weekly and still hope it will arrive soon. In the meantime, students are allowed to wear a black or navy sweatshirt/zip up until the orders arrive.

Below find more information regarding ordering class group, a fun family Bingo night opportunity on December 4, and the Ashland Theater play for Saint Ambrose students.

Thank you for your support of our mission, and for sharing your children with us. I am grateful for the many blessings in our community.

Loving Lord,
As I express my gratitude to you in prayer, may it be a pleasing, joyful sound to you.
Thank you, Lord, for your love. It brings me acceptance and significance.
Thank you, Lord, for your truth. It brings me guidance and direction.
Thank you, Lord, for your mercy. It brings me help and comfort.
Thank you, Lord, for your faithfulness. It brings me stability and strength.
Thank you, Lord, for your beauty displayed in the earth. It brings me joy and delight.
Thank you, Lord, for your way of redemption - the cross. It brings me salvation and regeneration.

Parenting in Two Moments: Discipline Strategies That Protect Your Connection

https://calendly.com/drjulesnolan/parenting-in-two-moment-discipline-to-protect-your-connection

We are always parenting in two moments. This moment, now, to manage the issue at hand, and at the same time we are modeling what our children will expect in their future relationships. When we discipline with a focus on the "long game", we are more likely to model healthy interactions and set good expectations. This session will focus on how, when, and how much to discipline, using concrete examples and techniques.

Difference Between Reading and Spelling Procedures

Reading and spelling are reciprocal processes. This means we need to teach them in different ways. Reading is a recognition, decoding, or receptive language task, whereas spelling is a production, encoding, or expressive language task. It is normal for students to struggle more with spelling because it is a production task. In spelling, there is often more than one way to spell a sound (example: k, c, or ck). Students need to explicitly learn the rules (example: use -ay for the long a sound at the end of a word) as well as see words in print multiple times so they can map the correct spelling. Here are the steps for how to approach reading and spelling with one-syllable words:

Reading (This models the procedure we want students to use when they encounter an unknown word in a text):

  1. Tap the sounds in the word.

  2. Blend the sounds together to form a word.

  3. Read the whole word.

Spelling (This models the procedure we want students to use when they need to spell a word):

  1. Tell students the word.

  2. Students repeat the whole word.

  3. Students tap the sounds in the word.

  4. Students spell the word, one letter a time.

General Information

Lunch - The USDA will be providing free lunches for ALL students for the 2021-2022 school year. First meal and milk will be free of charge. There is a charge for seconds ($2.00) and milk (.60) taken with cold lunch. Look for lunch account information in the back-to-school folder.

Even though school lunches are of no charge this year, if you feel your family would qualify for free and reduced lunch, we ask that you fill out the application. By filling out this application, Saint Ambrose receives funding and will benefit the family as well. Please print this application and return the completed application to the school office.

Communication from school:

  • Log in to Sycamore to update any changes to your contact information. Download the Sycamore Education app to quickly access lunch menu, calendar and other essential school information.

School Emergency Closing Notifications -

This school year we will continue to use our Sycamore System for text and email notifications for school closures and delays due to inclement weather. You may also check Kare 11 and WCCO for notification that District 833 is closed - if they are closed we will be closed.

Please look for a TEST TEXT and phone call on Monday, November 8th in the afternoon, from the school office.

Make sure to update Sycamore with your current phone numbers and emails as soon as possible.

VIRTUS Training Information for Volunteers

As we did last year, and in attempts to mitigate COVID, we will not be inviting volunteers into the building. While there will be exceptions to this rule, we feel this is the best practice at this time. However, we are encouraging you to go through the process so once we are ready to welcome volunteers back into the building, you are ready to volunteer should you wish to do so. VIRTUS Training

If you have not re-credential and have gotten an e-mail to that effect, or you know you have not re-credentialed in the last three years, you will want to do that here. Re-credential for VIRTUS

New Families

This section is dedicated to helping inform our new families about things that are happening at Saint Ambrose that they might not be aware of.

Would you like to volunteer at Saint Ambrose?

Although right now we are limiting volunteers we hope to be able to welcome parent volunteers back to school this year.

In order to volunteer you must complete the following:

- Virtus Training

- Background Check

- Code of Conduct

If you are hoping to volunteer in the future we recommend you to go through the process so once we are ready to welcome volunteers back into the building, you are ready to volunteer should you wish to do so. VIRTUS Training
