Blueberries
I couldn't resist the impulse to start off the blueberry section with a joke. I hope you're ready! So...How do you make a blueberry turnover? The answer will follow a little bit of interesting blueberry info.
The first cultivated crop of blueberries was not successfully grown until 1912, but wild blueberries had been an important source of food for Native Americans for thousands of years. Blueberries keep longer in storage than many other similar berries, making them an important forage crop that Native Americans dried and stored for winter. The silvery “bloom” found on the skin of blueberries is a naturally occurring compound that helps protect the fruit, and it is why you should only wash blueberries right before you’re going to eat them. And, the answer to our blueberry joke is - Push it down a hill!
You probably have a favorite way to enjoy this delightful summer berry but perhaps the links below will give some inspiration to try something new.
Yellow Squash & Zucchini
“Summer squash” is a term often used to refer to yellow squash; however, zucchini is actually the most popular of all the summer squash types. You can eat the peel of summer squashes and you really should! The skin contains most of the nutrients. It is rich in potassium, vitamin A , and folate. Both of these types of summer squash can be eaten raw (I love including thin slices of yellow squash on veggie trays) or cooked in so many ways.
These gorgeous summer squashes come from one of our very favorite places, Harvey's Garden, from one of our very favorite people, our friend Tracy. When her garden has extra bounty, she loves to add to the CSA. If you stop by Harbel's Market in Columbiana on a Saturday, you can purchase more of Tracy's produce.
