Creating Opportunities Together
A Thought or Two From Mr. Nieslanik
Good Day! Last year on this date I left the Chiles Center after our women's basketball team participated in their first game of the OSAA Basketball Tournament, made it home, and then was called to an emergency meeting at the District Office at 8:00pm. The news was that we would be closing temporarily due to the COVID-19 virus. Well, here we sit one year later. Last March seems so long ago. We have gone through so much over the course of the year, and learned so much. Today, we are putting the final touches on the formal return to school in a hybrid format. We feel good about the plan we are putting in place to welcome Skyhawks back into the building for both hybrid instruction and social/engagement activities. As I did last week, I will put into this newsletter information as it is finalized. As always, if you have any questions, please free to reach out to us at 503-356-2890 or via email. It is best to reach out to your child's Assistant Principal for support.

Forecasting and Course Selection
Our current freshmen, sophomores and juniors will forecast for classes for the 2021-22 school year beginning on March 31st. This process will not close until April 9th. With us not being fully in-person the forecasting process can be completed fully asynchronously. We do know that many of you also like to be involved in the course selection process to ensure your child is preparing themselves with the appropriate classes that will meet their need. We will be sharing all forecasting information with families and students on Wednesday, March 31st.
Timeline for Forecasting:
- March 31: Forecasting help during Advisory
- April 1 and 2: Counselor One-on-One Help Sessions via zoom
- April 1: Program Information Night and Forecasting Help, 5:30-7:00pm
- April 7: Forecasting support during Advisory
- April 8 and 9: Counselor One-on-One Help Sessions via zoom
- April 9: Forecasting closes at 3:30pm
You may wonder why do we have to complete this now. It is because the counselors need to clean up the forecasting requests and course numbers before I can begin staffing the building for the 2021-22 school year, which begins in Mid-April.

Hybrid Instruction: Updates and Notes
Health and Safety:
SRHS is working through the process of student arrival, movement and dismissal. We have defined the following processes and working on details at this time:
- Busses will drop off and pick up in the North Parking lot.
- Walkers, riders, and students being dropped off will enter through the main doors.
- Student drivers will park in the North Parking lot and enter through the auditorium entrance doors.
- Specialized programs will continue to enter through the West Doors.
- The fishbowl doors will NOT be an entry point for students.
- Students will have both a visual check getting on the bus and entering the building, going straight to first period where attendance will be taken to contact trace, if needed.
- Hallway movement will be defined as if they were well-marked roads, basically keep to the right!
- Restroom processes will be defined through a sign-out and sign-in process using QR codes and/or chromebooks.
- All students will exit the building at 2:30, through the same door they entered.
- Food will be available for students at the end of the day to take home for their next two days worth of breakfast and dinner.
- If a student is reentering the building for clubs, activities or athletics they will go through another check-in process in order to control contract tracing protocols.
- Signage will support social distancing and movement patterns.
Instruction:
- BSD Instructional Technology Department is currently researching, practicing, and experimenting with multiple different delivery techniques for teachers. Their learning will be shared with staff shortly after Spring Break as we begin to dig deep with instructional strategies for our return to campus in April.
- Our number one goal is to do our very best to support students who are staying in CDL, those who are home on their non-in-person attendance day, and those who are sitting in classrooms.
Relationships and Community Engagement:
- We are putting the final touches on a calendar of activities for all four classes and for the school. I am waiting for several district-level decisions to be made, as these will guide or work at the building level.

Lightspeed Parent Portal on Canvas
Parents are now able to click a link on their weekly Lightspeed Parent Report to create an account on the Lightspeed Portal. This portal will allow you to block after school internet access, and also be able to view your student’s internet history on demand. BSD has created a Parent Portal FAQ which hopefully will answer any questions you have around the new portal.
Testing Update
IB Testing Update
IB has recently shared with teachers how IB marks will be given. The individual course mark will be defined by classwork, the Internal Assessment or Oral Assessment, and the predicted grade given by the teacher. To learn more about the predicted grade process you can reference the linked document below.
Annual Student Survey
High school students will be surveyed this year by accessing a link through a Canvas announcement. The survey will be available in English and Spanish. The survey window is March 30-June 4. SRHS will survey our student body in April once the Forecasting Process is complete.
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Student surveys of middle and high schools include three optional questions for students to identify their gender, ethnicity / race, and sexual orientation. These questions allow for additional levels of analysis of questions on inclusion, safety and bullying.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school under the Annual Surveys tab and is posted at https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/accountabiity/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify Sho Shigeoka or Southridge High Schoool at 503-356-2890.
Your help is much appreciated!
Our band is in a four day matching grant fundraiser. Please consider supporting our band program and helping us repair our brass instruments. Watch their Fundraising Video here! You can donate here!
This year our activities and athletics are not charging for participation. This is exciting news and a much appreciated decision by BSD. We also know that this allows more students to participate than what normally would have. To help us support students in future years, if you would like to make a donation, it would be much appreciated. You can define which program you want the money to go to. You can access our donation link here.
