SLE WEEKLY UPDATE December 9, 2022
Good Afternoon,
I hope you had a wonderful week. It is hard to believe we are entering our second week of December and with winter weather and more indoor activities occuring, we are anticipating more illness among our students. If your student is not feeling well, please keep them home to prevent the spread of illness. Please see the SLCS District Guidance on when to keep your student home for illness.
As we approach Winter Break I want to remind parents that there is no school from December 24, 2022 through January 8, 2023. If you are planning to travel out of town and anticipate absences for your student, please touch base with our attendance office and let Mrs. Namel know the expected dates. Mrs. Kristie Namel: namelk@slcs.us or (248) 573-8710. Please reference our District Calendar for more information.
As a reminder, our student council is hosting an Active Faith Drive through December 22, and there are still items on the Key Clubs' Giving Tree that need to be purchased for our families if you are able. All current fundraisers are listed on the SLE website under the School Links menu, SLE Fundraisers 2022-2023. Please consider checking out the current fundraisers and supporting our student organizations and community.
Have a great weekend and Be East!

BUS LOOP & STUDENT PICK-UP/DROP-OFF REMINDERS
As you know, we are piloting a change in the location of the bus loop and parent drop-off locations. The rationale for implementing this pilot includes minimizing parent traffic in our student parking lots on the west end of the building, providing a larger space for parent vehicles for pick up and drop off, expediting bus departure, and reducing the amount of traffic in the staff and visitor parking lots which ultimately will provide a safer environment for our students and staff as they enter and leave the building. This pilot will also help inform decisions regarding resource allocation for upcoming bond projects.
We ask that you please adhere to the following guidelines:
- School starts at 7:20 AM. You may need to adjust your departure time when coming to school in the morning to avoid tardies.
Parent Pick-Up/Drop-off - This is to be done at the Parent Drop-Off-Loop on the north side of the building, Commons entrance ONLY. This is the second driveway on your left as you turn onto Johns Rd. off of 10 Mile Rd. Parents are not allowed to park in the Staff Parking Lot and will be required to wait in line using the full loop outside of the Commons/Cafeteria doors. Please see the graphic below.
- Please pull as far forward as you can to drop off your student. Students may exit their vehicle anywhere along the sidewalk and proceed to the doors.
Please do not cut in front of buses as they are exiting the loop after school.
Student Parking - This is done in both lots on the west side of the building closest to the softball and baseball fields and tennis courts.
Bus Pick-Up/Drop-off - This is done at the Main Office entrance which is the first driveway on your left as you turn onto Johns Rd off of 10 Mile Rd.
Staff Parking - Office staff parks in the lot at the Main Office/Bus Loop entrance and teaching staff parks at the Commons/Cafeteria and Parent Drop-Off entrance.
Thank you for your patience.

SEAL OF BILITERACY
We are happy to announce that students will have the opportunity to take the Seal of Biliteracy test at South Lyon East High School on February 9th, 2023. This is an optional assessment that the State of Michigan offers to students who demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English. Students can receive a seal on their diploma and transcripts as evidence of these skills. With the seal, employers are informed of a student’s ability to converse with international colleagues. The Seal of Biliteracy can also assist colleges and universities to better gauge appropriate placement in World Language courses.
East families will be sent a Skylert on 1/10/23 with more information about the Seal of Biliteracy including information on how to sign up for the Seal of Biliteracy.

A MESSAGE FROM MRS. HOGAN
At South Lyon East we show our appreciation for our teachers by giving them a gift of Holiday Treats at Christmas time. This year it will be on Tuesday, December 13. We ask parents to donate 6-7 dozen of their favorite HOMEMADE Holiday cookies or treats. We lay all the cookies out and the teachers fill a box with 1-2 samples of each treat to enjoy over the Holidays. Cookies need to be dropped off by 1:30 p.m. on December 13, on a disposable tray. You will go to the main office doors (off Johns Road) and there will be a cart set out between the two sets of doors to set the cookies on. If the cart is full, you can ring the "doorbell" and someone will come out to get them from you.
If you'd like to send in cookies, please sign up
on the Christmas Cookie Sign-Up Genius. I also need shirt-sized gift boxes, and tissue paper, as well as a couple of volunteers, to help with set up and clean up.
The East staff members absolutely LOVE Cookie Day! I wish you could all see their smiling faces when they come in to get their treats! Thanks for making this special day possible for them.
