Room 26 Weekly News
April 16-20, 2018
Announcements
Thank you SO much for all of the kind birthday wishes last week! I loved all the cards, gifts, goodies, and kind words you shared with me. :-)
It's hard to believe we have just over 40 days left of school! We have a lot to finish in these last weeks. Mr. Klimas had a great talk with 5th graders on Friday about finishing strong!
Academic Updates
Math
Language Arts
Students are completing a 5-paragraph informative essay about a severe weather event (hurricanes, tornadoes, or blizzards). They have read a book and watched a video about their weather event, and will be using evidence from both sources in their writing. This will be perfect preparation for their upcoming performance task in two weeks when they will be asked to read two articles, watch a video, and then write an informative essay that addresses a given prompt.
In reading, students will be reading books and articles that correspond with our current Social Studies unit about the creation of our government.
Students are also working through some practice Reading/ELA tests online in preparation for the upcoming state testing. State testing is scheduled for the week of May 21st.
I am so grateful to have Mrs. Kawzenuk and Mrs. Goode in my classroom this semester as we are able to do 3 small reading group rotations each day. That means that for one solid hour of our reading block, your student is working with a teacher in a small group for writing, test prep, and reading.
Science
Social Studies
We will begin our next Social Studies unit this week. It will cover the formation of our government after the Revolutionary War. We will discuss the shortcomings of the Articles of Confederation, the creation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, as well as our 3-branch system of government.
I am so proud that almost everyone has passed all 50 states and capitals. If your child has not yet passed the "All 50" test, please continue to encourage them to study and prepare at home so they can reach this milestone by the end of May. Our final three testing dates will be Friday, April 27, Friday, May 11, and Friday, May 25.
