Suicide
By: Cole McCreary
Reason:
I chose this topic because it is a big problem in today's society, especially to teens just like in the story of Romeo and Juliet. It is horrible to think that anyone, teens, adults, seniors, can be so done with life and depressed, or guilty or whatever the case is, that they decide to take their own lives. It amazes me even more that this is happening more and more with teens, who have so much more time to live on this earth, but are still so miserable that they cant even stand to spend another minute being alive. It is so important to be aware of these things and to help someone that is in need.
How the story reflects the issue/How it relates to today/How to solve the problem
Connection with the story/Relation to today
The story reflects this problem very well, Romeo and Juliet both kill themselves because of their sorrow and longing to be with each other forever. Juliet, being only 14 and Romeo not being too much older both had a lot more time to live on this earth, but decided to end it all because they couldn't stand to be away from each other. This relates to today because teens commit suicide all the time for a million different reasons, some more severe than others, and the overwhelming depression, guilt, sadness or purely being completely miserable all the time causes the teens to just want to escape from it all forever. Just like Romeo and Juliet.
How to solve the problem
One way to make this problem get smaller and smaller is to just treat eachother better, and for people to talk to and help others that are really struggling. The littlest nice gesture or new friendship can save someone from taking their own life. Also to prevent teen suicide people could help those teenagers realize that theres so much more of life to live, and that most likely someday the problem that is bothering them now, will lessen or be completely solved eventually, and they will end up doing so much good in their lives.
