SLRI Update

April 2019 RILA Transition

Save the Date: May 22 Celebration

To celebrate our merging with the Rhode Island Library Association (RILA), we are cohosting a FREE cocktail hour with the Coalition of Library Advocates (COLA) on Wednesday, May 22 at 4:30. It will take place at Bryant University as part of the RILA Conference. We will be announcing our award winners that afternoon. Look for a separate invitation to come.

We want to make this an annual event, and we'd like to come up with a fun name for it. If you have an idea, email it to Lisa Girard at The winning suggestion will get a prize at the event!

Advocacy Update

We are fortunate that the state Library Board is making plans to lobby on our behalf at the State House. They are working on an new survey to gather important data to show lawmakers the state of RI school libraries.

Keep an eye out for the link to share your information. It should only take about 10 minutes (the board timed the beta survey at our last meeting). We are excited that school libraries are being prioritized by the Board, and your data is necessary for their work to be effective.

Upcoming Changes: Communications

Now that we are a part of RILA, we are able to take advantage of their communications services. We will be phasing out the web site; Stephanie Mills has been working with RILA to move our content over to their site. We will let you know when the new URL is live. In addition, we will be phasing out Smore newsletters and using RILA's Constant Contact account instead.

You can start using this new email address for board communication; Deanna Brooks will monitor the inbox and forward messages to the appropriate people:

Carol Byrne is our new Communications Chair; anyone interested in helping with newsletters, meeting minutes, informational emails, or the Twitter account can contact her at

Upcoming Changes: Board Meetings

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, we are scheduling quarterly board meetings next year instead of monthly. In an effort to boost attendance and include more members, we are planning to use the Watering Hole format for them. In September, November, March, and May, the board will meet at a restaurant in a different part of the state. Appetizers will be provided!

We are renaming our meetings "Meet-ups," and they are open to all SLRI members. Please join us to give your input on issues and initiatives.

We will schedule additional working meetings as needed for things like conference planning.

Reminder Re: Membership Renewals

When it is time for your membership to be renewed, you will receive an email from RILA and be directed to their site.

Much like how the ALA/AASL memberships work, you will need to join RILA first, and then add SLRI as a section.

Step 1: Select your membership level
