May 7, 2019
The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board held a public meeting on Monday, May 6. The following are select highlights from that meeting.
Board Celebrates National Teacher Appreciation Week
"We are a sought after school district and it's because of the immense quality and care of our tremendous teachers," said Human Resources Director Kathe Monroe, who presented West Linn-Wilsonville Education Association Representative and Wood Middle School Teacher Matt Bell with a gift of appreciation on behalf of all WLWV educators.
The Board also recognized the District's team of talented nurses, reading a proclamation identifying May 6 as Nurse Appreciation Day in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District.
"On behalf of the Board, I want to say thank you to Karen (Pyeatt), Lindsay (Nowak), Nancy (Buchwald), Mary (Groh), Josh (Harrel), and Michelle (Bloom), who make up our incredible nursing team. You are such a valued part of this School District and appreciated for what you do for students."
District Presents Positive Classrooms and Social-Emotional Learning Update
District Administrators provided an overview of the complex and pivotal work taking place in classrooms throughout the District. Administration shared the different frameworks the District uses to support ALL students, some of the tools staff use and professional development they engage in, and the evidence-based research that guides District practices.
Inclusive Practices are at the core of all teaching and learning that takes place in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District, and the District prides itself on Inclusive and Equitable Schools. In WLWV, this means every student has the chance to attend their neighborhood school; every student has a sense of belonging in the general education classroom community with access to general education learning; WLWV's most high-leverage work is done in the general education classroom; and some students may have individualized schedules or supports because there isn't one size fits all educational approach.
Dr. Pryor and Dr. Spencer-Iiams shared the complexity of creating inclusive schools and classrooms while highlighting the research-based evidence of its effectiveness and implementation in West Linn-Wilsonville schools. Parents and Teachers shared stories and evidence of how inclusive and restorative practices have positively impacted their students and classrooms, highlighting the many benefits of what can be challenging work.
