It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas!
Books are the best! They even make great Christmas trees!
What Are We Reading?
What Are We Learning?
We began November with Make-It Monday, Tinker Tuesday, Work-It Wednesday, Thinker Thursday and Figure Friday. Our older students enjoyed creating catapults and seesaws using K'nex blocks. There were moments of productive struggle, but in the end, it was rewarding to see blocks fly across the library! Our "Littles" read The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires, and were challenged to create a most magnificent thing with Legos. They loved describing their most magnificent things to their classmates.
We had tons of Thanksgiving fun! Our K-2 students, read a non-fiction book about Thanksgiving on myOn.com. Students responded to the text by creating a Thanksgiving table with blocks and craft sticks. There was a wrinkle in this challenge, students couldn't use glue or tape, and the table had to be large enough to fit a Thanksgiving feast.
Students in grades 3-5 learned primary sources could help them gain a deeper understanding of the concept. We learned about Sarah Hale and her influence to make Thanksgiving a national holiday while reading, Thank You, Sarah. Students were surprised to see the letter she wrote to Abraham Lincoln was housed at The Library of Congress! Students enjoyed reading her letter, and it gave them insight on her personality.
We closed November by beginning our Christmas Countries project. Students are using a webquest to research many different countries. Stay tuned for pictures of student presentations. Students will be presenting on the following countries: Hungary, Russia, France, Argentina, Australia, Lebanon, Brazil, Japan, India, Egypt, Sweden and many more. 28 countries are being researched and shared. Students are enjoying learning about these different lands.
PTO Donation
At the beginning of the year, we surveyed Cahaba students about the library. Overwhelmingly, students asked for more comfortable seating to use as their "reading spot". Thanks to the Cahaba PTO, we were able to purchase 5 big bean bags for our reading centers. The kids are loving them! Thank you PTO!
