Abbotts Hill Elementary
The Jaguar Fun Run is Coming on October 26th!
Parents, today our Jaguar Fun Run kicked off with an exciting Pep Rally, and we are thrilled about this year’s program! The first step is to register your student on funrun.com using the school name: Abbotts Hill Elementary. This year, we are raising funds for iPads and other Personalized Learning Technology for our students. Today, your student is coming home with a Pledge Crown, where you can learn more about helping our school through the Fun Run. We appreciate your support!

A Message From Ms. Chan
Dear 4th Grade Parents and Guardians,
The Georgia Department of Education is conducting a field test for the Reading & Evidence-Based Writing section of the English Language Arts Georgia Milestones Assessment. Field testing is an important step in the test development process. It allows for a trial run of items that in the future could appear on a Georgia Milestones assessment. As part of this field test, schools from across Georgia have been identified to administer two sets of Georgia Milestones test items.
We are pleased that our school has been asked to participate in this field test. You are receiving this letter because your child has been selected to participate. The Reading & Evidence-Based Writing field test is scheduled to be administered October 24 and 25, 2017. The testing time required is approximately 30 minutes for Section 1 and 90 minutes for Section 2 of the field test. The field test will be administered over two days.
Given this field test will occur in the fall, students will be assessed on the previous grade-level (or course), using an off-grade approach. This approach ensures students are assessed on content they have had an opportunity to learn (albeit the previous school year). The off-grade approach means that students will answer items on the field test for the previous grade level or course (i.e., the grade or course they just completed).
It is important to note that students are not being evaluated and will not receive a score for the field test; however, participation in the field test offers an opportunity for additional experience working with this section of the test. The information gained from this field test will provide the state with data to aid in the evaluation of the test items. There is no need for you, or your student, to prepare in advance of this field test.
We sincerely appreciate your student’s participation in this important part of the development process for Georgia Milestones.

Yearbook Cover Art Contest
Draw a picture of your favorite activity at Abbotts Hill. This can be a time during your school day, or at your favorite AHE event. Show Jazzy Jan in the scene!
Submit art on: 8.5” x 11” sheet of white paper, vertical (portrait) orientation. All entries must include: Your name, grade and teacher written in PENCIL on the back of your artwork (NOT FRONT COVER!)
Tips for a good entry: Use up the whole sheet of paper. Not a lot of white space – use lots of color! (including the background). Mix up your medium! (play with one or more of the following: markers, crayons, water colors, oil pastels, etc.) Coloring with a pencil or pen sometimes doesn’t work well on the image when scanned.
ALL ENTRIES DUE BY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3rd
Submit your drawing to the AHE Front Desk. Questions? Email AHEyearbook@gmail.com

Girls on the Run will be returning to Abbotts Hill for the Spring 2018 season! This program, for girls in 3rd through 5th grade, is looking for a couple of parent volunteers to serve as coaches. Coaches do not need to be runners, they just need to be able to commit 4 hours per week for 10-12 weeks. Girls on the Run will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays immediately after school. For more information on becoming a GOTR coach, visit: https://www.girlsontherunatlanta.org/Coach
Coach training events will be on December 2, January 6, January 13, or January 27.

You and your daughter will both be glad you volunteered!
Where in the World is Jazzy Jan?
Do you want to share your own family heritage and culture with others at school? Please consider making a short video (3 to 5 min.) We would like to share it with all students during Lunch time once a month. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Joy Kim at kimjoy@fultonschools.org
Clinic News - Handwashing and Our Health
Sunday, October 15th was Global Handwashing Day! Communities around the world held discussions on the importance of washing your hands with soap and water to prevent disease. We are very lucky to have access to both soap products AND clean water here in our community. Many people around the world do not, including those recovering from recent natural disasters. Proper hand washing is THE #1 way to prevent the spread of germs that cause stomach bugs and many respiratory illnesses, like the cold or flu.
We are talking about proper handwashing here at Abbotts Hill. Please help remind your students & family to wash hands before handling or eating food and to always wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds after using the restroom. We are instructing them to sing the ABC song or 2 rounds of Happy Birthday while they wash. We like our Jaguars healthy so that they can be Respectful, Responsible, & Ready to learn!
