NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
September 30, 2022
Message from Principal Melamed
Dear Nederland Community,
October is bullying awareness month and as you know, BVSD and Nederland Elementary value the social and emotional development of our students. One of the goals of our work in developing these social and emotional skills is to help our school be a safe, respectful place where everyone can learn. To further help our school be a safe and respectful place, this year we are going to use the Second Step Bullying Prevention curriculum (Please see the Counselor’ Corner below for more information).
An essential part of the program is understanding exactly what bullying is and how it is different from ordinary conflict. Conflict is a natural part of human relationships as people interact, grow, and change. Even though it can cause us stress and can hurt, conflict is not bullying because it happens between two people who are equal in the relationship (think: friends or classmates). Sometimes conflict escalates into a disagreement with a strong emotional reaction, strong words, and hurt feelings. Often in conflict, both sides want the issue to be resolved. Bullying means the person (or group of people) who is doing the bullying is acting intentionally to coerce, intimidate, or cause physical, mental, or emotional harm to the other person. There is also something unequal (including physical or social power) about the relationship between the two people or group(s). Please refer to the normal conflict VS bullying table below.
For bullying prevention to work, everyone at school needs to be involved. Our staff is trained how to recognize and respond to bullying; support children who have been bullied; correct behaviors of children who are bullying; and use strategies that support a positive school and classroom climate.
And we need your help, too! Get involved in making our school a safe and respectful place by letting us know if you hear about bullying at our school. Make sure your child knows to tell you or someone at school if he or she is being bullied. You can also Make a Bullying Report online. Please remember to give your child the clear message that it is never okay to bully others. For more on BVSD’s anti-bullying policy and specific procedures, go to: Bullying Prevention - Boulder Valley School District
As always please let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
Caleb
Counselor's Corner - Kristen Kron
Hello NES families,
Kindergarten through fifth grade will be participating in 4 bullying prevention lessons over the next month using the Second Step BULLYING PREVENTION UNIT. The goal of this unit is to teach students important skills for getting along with others and ways to stop bullying behavior including:
• Recognize when bullying is happening
• Report bullying to a caring adult
• Refuse to let bullying happen to themselves or others
• Be a bystander who stands up and is part of the solution to bullying
Your child’s classroom teacher will be sending home an introductory letter and a home link in Friday Folders after each week’s lesson. The home links are optional, but are very helpful in reinforcing skills (You do not need to send them back in once completed). Please see below for resources to support your child at home. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers. AND—as always—every book they buy earns rewards for our school.
Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from October 18th-21st 9:00am-3:00pm in the Discovery Lab. On OCTOBER 18TH WE WILL STAY OPEN LATE FOR PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES! 4pm-6:30pm
This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.

District News
Reminder of District Professional Development Day: Oct 17
There will be no school on October 17th for a professional development day, but district offices will remain open should parents need to contact BVSD departments.
Back-to-School is an Important Time to Talk Health Coverage
Is your student without health insurance? Having health insurance is critical for children to thrive at school and in life. Children with health insurance are more likely to complete high school and graduate college compared with their peers who don’t have access to care.
Health coverage for kids benefits everyone. Studies have shown that children with health coverage are less likely to miss school due to illness and are better prepared to learn, meaning fewer missed days of work for parents. Fewer missed school days may also allow kids and teens to stay involved with after-school activities like clubs and sports. Parents can visit Health First Colorado (Colorado’s Medicaid Program) to learn more and apply for health coverage.
BVSD needs bus drivers
Please help us continue to spread the word that BVSD needs bus drivers (or consider applying yourself!)
Every bus driver makes a difference. Each driver we hire helps us get 100 students to school each day by serving both elementary and secondary routes. Driving a bus for BVSD is a great way to earn competitive pay and benefits and make an impact in children's lives and your community. BVSD provides all the training needed to earn a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and work with students. The hours are flexible enough to integrate with other jobs or interests. When not driving a bus, BVSD bus drivers are also BVSD parents, professional athletes, retirees, college students, artists, entrepreneurs, and more. If this sounds like you or someone you know, have them apply to be a bus driver at https://jobs.bvsd.org/.
Signing bonuses are available: $2,500 for new bus driver hires with a CDL (B with PS endorsement and no air brake restriction) and $1,000 + free CDL training for those without! No Experience Necessary!
EcoTober Community Event and Costume Exchange
The cities of Lafayette, Louisville, Town of Superior, and Boulder Valley School District are hosting a regional sustainability event called Eco-Tober on Sunday, Oct. 2, from noon-4pm at Centaurus High School (10300 South Boulder Rd) in Lafayette.
Eco-Tober will feature over 50 exhibitors, a performance by Jeff and Paige, hands-on workshops, a Halloween costume exchange and interactive activities for a fun family-friendly event. We invite you to join us for this event to envision and create healthy, resilient, and sustainable communities in Boulder County. This event is free and open to the public. For additional information and the event schedule go to https://www.lafayetteco.gov/2817/EcoTober
The event is also looking for volunteers! If you would like to see behind the scenes of Eco-Tober and help make this event a success, register at https://bit.ly/EcotoberVolunteering2022. Let’s make Halloween Eek-o-Friendly with a Halloween costume exchange. From Sept. 1-26 we will be collecting good-conditioned, unwanted, and old Halloween costumes for all ages. Come by the Eco-Tober event where we will be distributing costumes first come, first served throughout the event.
