Hawks Happenings

Happy November!

It is hard to believe that November is here! We have now been in school for 45 days and we are 1/4 of the way through with this school year. If you haven't had the opportunity to come in for a parent-teacher conference, then I suggest you connect with your child's teacher.

Below you will see a copy of the WvES Conference Report. This document was recently finalized by our School Improvement Team and will be used for parent/teacher/student conferences moving forward.

  • Please remember that if you come to the gym door in the afternoon to pick up your child, you are considered a 'walker' and you should be physically walking home or off our campus. We only have a few families who live nearby who take advantage of this and having more people at the door creates congestion and confusion. Please make sure to follow this procedure. Thanks!
  • Don't forget that you should write a note or stop by the main office to make a change with your child's transportation.
  • Winter weather may be coming soon! This is a great time to double check with your child's teacher what you put down for your child's transportation plan in case we had an Early Dismissal due to inclement weather. Remember that we can't call home to check every child's transportation on a release day so please be proactive and check now!
  • We are having about 20 - 30 students tardy in the morning. Remember that students must be in their classrooms at 7:55 AM in order to avoid a tardy slip. Please strive to arrive on time!
The Kindness Adventure is coming tomorrow to Weaverville Elementary! This is a program focused on helping students understand the importance of showing kindness to others. This program is free of charge thanks to the kindness of the previous school to host the program since it operates on a 'pay it forward' basis. In order to provide an opportunity for our school to 'pay it forward' there will be an optional selling of items related to the program next week in the morning. This is NOT a fundraiser for our school and as always, your participation is optional.

Local Leader Lessons - Putting the 7 Habits of Leader In Me to work in the real world!

Recently our students did something amazing thanks to the efforts of key adults and wonderful Local Leaders who were willing to share 'Lessons' about how they use the 7 habits in their work! A HUGE thank you to these leaders who spent the day with us, and to Jennifer Banks who collaborated with our Specialists to make this happen!

Chris Tomsic, Water Resources Engineer at EcoSystems Services Engineering, spoke to students about his goal (shared with many others) to create a Greenway along Reems Creek, connecting Karpen Field to Lake Louise. Which habit does he emphasize? Ask your student! Learn more at www.ConnectReemsCreek.org

Julie Gilliand, Landscape Architect at Site Design Studio, spoke to students about the design and installation of the new playground at North Windy Ridge. What habit did Ms. Gilliland use for her part in this effort? Ask your student! You can see photos of the playground on the Buncombe County Schools facebook page.

Dr. Maureen Drinkard-Donley, Professor of Environmental Science and Ecology at Brevard College, spoke to students about her research in the desert. Which of the seven habits did she use knowing that scorpions would be a problem? Ask your student! Learn more at https://brevard.edu/environmental-studies/

Thank you again to these awesome leaders for sharing their time and talents with us!
