A.T.O.M STEM Academy Monthly News
December Edition
December STEMtastic News
Hope all had a Thankful November! In November, we had a chance to see one of our STEM scholars represent MLK well on RPS LIVE! Please see below for pictures and information about that scholar. Also, in November, we asked our STEM teachers to mention a daily STEM Connection to help scholars better understand how STEM directly relates to just about everything. STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are the key elements that drive our STEM Academy and we want all of our scholars to be empowered to pursue a STEM career of their choice.
To extend our scholars' understanding, we challenge you (their parents and/or guardian) to question them daily about their learning and more specifically, how STEM relates to what they're learning. For example, please have them explain to you "What is in our STEM logo?" Lastly, in November, we introduced the opportunities outlined in the after school enrichment program, NextUP! Please see the below attachments for information about the NextUp program.
We appreciate your partnership STEM families and we understand how important this African Proverb is for our students, "It takes a village to raise a child." I want you to know that we are in this together and we want to support you and your scholar in any way possible.
Speaking of support, parents we want to call on you once more...as of recently, we have delved deeper into our attendance data and we noticed that some of our scholars are experiencing significant absenteeism. Please remember, when scholars are missing days from school, they are missing valuable instructional time. Please see the flyer below titled "Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow" for information on the effect of "Good School Attendance."
Just so you know, report cards were mailed and should be at your doorsteps by the end of this week. If you do not receive them by 12/4, please call the school for assistance.

What is STEM?
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Our STEM Academy fosters a love of these four disciplines by integrating them into our content areas. STEM focuses on hands-on and relevant learning experiences for our students. It engages students and helps establish connections between the school, workplace, community, and the global economy. Each lesson ties directly into the curriculum and focuses on the 5Cās of the Profile of a Virginia Graduate: Collaboration, Creativity, Critical thinking, Citizenship, and Communication. Students model the Engineering Design Process by Asking themselves what is the problem, Imagining possible solutions, Planning materials, Creating a prototype, and thinking of ways to Improve through redesigning.
Why is STEM important? (Click below to read an article about the positive effects)
