Connect 4 Solving for "x" 7th Grade Tournament
Today kicked off Meadow Park's 7th Grade Solve for "x" Math Challenge. 64 different teams, spanning 8 different math classes (all math 7/8, no Summa students) have been preparing for this challenge. Each team has 3-4 students and each battle is between 4 different teams. 2 teams will advance from each battle. This is a double elimination bracket so teams will have another opportunity if they lose once. Championships will be held on Friday, December 21st in the Meadow Park Library at 1pm.
How do you play?
Each team works together to solve a given equation for X. Equations will be have at least 3 steps and go up to 8 steps. The equations get harder as you make your way deep into the tournament. Everyone in the team has to write the problem down and show all of their work. They are allowed to work together and help each other. Calculators are also allowed. Once a team is ready with their answers, they get to place their teams’ sticky note on a big connect 4 grid (7x6). The first two teams to connect 4 advance to the next round. There are only 11 equations available to solve for each team in each round. The problems are identical for each team within the same round. Once a team places their sticky note on the connect 4 grid, they can get the next problem from the teacher and begin. Each battle will be 45 minutes in length. Tie breakers scenarios and challenge problems will be administered if teams fail to connect 4 within the time constraint.
- Round 1 is Friday, December 14
- Round 2 is Monday, December 17
- Round 3 is Tuesday, December 18
- No games on Wednesday, December 19th
- Rounds 4 and 5 are Thursday, December 20
- Championship Matches are Friday, December 21st (after lunch in the Library) and live-streamed via our schools Facebook page.
Our Championship Match will be live-streamed via our schools Facebook page.

Learner Profile Attribute of the Month - Communicators
The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who help to create a better and more peaceful world. When we focus on these character traits, not only do they promote the type of person we want our young adults to be - these are the soft skills that help our learners thrive in the classroom. The Learner Profile Attribute of the Month of December is Communicator. This week in advisory students began to explore this month’s attribute by preparing for a philosophical chairs debate around the essential question: “Does service truly matter?”
This weekend, check in with your student about their thoughts on the activity and what they learned about serving others. Ask them what they have learned about small acts of kindness and potential ways to take action within and beyond the school community. Students take action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to service—making a positive difference to the lives of others.
As a reminder, it is suggested that students complete 5 hours of service per semester. Students can log their hours and reflection using the link on our webpage.
Lost and Found
At Meadow Park, our "Lost and Found" is located in a corner in the cafeteria. We will be going through the pile that has accumulated throughout the year and sending non-labeled clothing to the Beaverton Clothes Closet over winter break. If you are concerned about lost items, please check out the Lost and Found prior to Wednesday, December 19th.
