1. What classes do you teach and/or programs and activities do you work with?
I am a paraeducator, so my job is to assist teachers and students in the classroom. My specialty is math, and I am assigned to classes where the need for individual assistance is the greatest. Currently I am in Prob/Stats, AGS 1, AGS2. I also work with students in AGS3 as well.
2. How long have you been at WHS?
I have been at Westview for 10 years.
3. What do you enjoy most about the Westview community?
The people, of course.
I am so fortunate to work with a fun, high energy, and talented group of people. There's so much to learn from each and everyone. Working with students is the highlight of my day. I find it very rewarding and satisfying because I know that I'm making a difference - one person at a time. I must admit that I love my job.
4. If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it - metaphorically speaking, getting a message out to millions or billions - what would it say and why? It could be a few words or a paragraph. It could be someone else's quote or any quotes you think of often or live your life by. Why would you put it on a billboard today?
Never give up, Keep trying.

1. What classes do you teach and/or programs and activities do you work with?
I am a school counselor here at Westview HS, serving students with last names STF-Z. I am also an advisor for our SAGA club and Westview Unidos.
2. How long have you been at WHS?
It is my first year here at WHS!
3. What do you enjoy most about the Westview community?
What I enjoy most about the Westview community is being able to work with such amazing students that are determined in reaching academic success, while also demonstrating kindness and empathy. I also really enjoy being able to work with other educators and students who are also very passionate about equity and mental health awareness.
I believe my billboard would say:
At times, the smallest trees have the biggest roots.
This quote overall reminds me that everyone is going through some kind of hardships or experiences that we do not see unless we fully seek to understand. This phrase also reminds me that at times we do not see the full picture of who someone is or what they are going through, reminding me of how important it is to approach everyone with kindness, empathy, and support. It also reminds me to never underestimate anyone in relation to their abilities and success.
Beaverton School District Antiracist Vision Statement
The BSD School Board unanimously voted to adopt an Antiracist Vision Statement. Informed by the work of the Beaverton Multicultural Educator Community (BMEC) and the 40-member Equitable Policies Task Force made up of students, family, community members and staff, the vision statement will guide our implementation of our Every Student Belongs Policy (ACB) and help ensure that our schools are safe and welcoming learning spaces for all.
Antiracist Vision Statement
Every student and employee has the right to learn and work in a safe and inclusive school environment that honors their race, color, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability and national origin.
Beaverton School District owns that our student outcomes currently point to our part in perpetuating institutional racism, and we commit to actions that address the current culture that is leading to these outcomes. Schools are critical in providing safe and creative opportunities for people to learn about different cultural and racial identities, have conversations about pressing issues and correct injustice wherever it exists. We commit to eliminating the structures, policies and practices that perpetuate inequities in our schools and in our community.
Beaverton School District will authentically engage each student, family and staff member to build connection, uplift understanding and truly value the diversity of our school communities. We will work to dismantle policies and systems that perpetuate institutional racism and barriers to education and other school-related activities. Students and families of color will see themselves represented in curriculum, materials, instruction, classrooms and all school activities in our district. Our district will honor, respect, represent, engage with and be accessible to students and adults from all communities.
Eliminating racism and all forms of bias is fundamental to our work — not just a part of our work. We commit to removing racism, white supremacy, hate speech and all forms of bigotry from our schools and communities.
Our district will:
- Seek and incorporate student, family, educator and administrator input in decision-making processes.
- Provide ongoing anti-bias and antiracist education to every staff member.
- Enforce Every Student Belongs procedures to prevent, interrupt and stop racist and biased incidents among students and between staff and students or community members.
- Create an inclusive learning community that honors, respects, represents, engages and is accessible to learners from all communities.
- Create permanent district funding and resources to promote equitable policies, structures and practices for BIPOC students and other marginalized groups.
- Implement policies, procedures and professional development to confront and eliminate conscious and unconscious racism and review these policies and procedures regularly to ensure we are meeting our commitments.
Thanksgiving Week Schedule Change
October 29, 2021
Dear BSD Community,
I hope that this message finds you well and into the swing of the school year. While I’m thrilled to have our students back in physical school buildings, I realize that this year — like last year — is not your typical school year. I applaud our staff members and students for their efforts to follow safety protocols — from social distancing to seat assignments to masking. Our low COVID-19 numbers are a testament to their commitment to mitigate the spread.
However, our school district continues to face challenges. BSD has been impacted by a nationwide labor shortage. Currently, we’re down 250-300 substitute teachers and 400 classified substitutes, as well as many full-time positions. This shortage is putting a considerable strain on our entire system. Mechanics and dispatchers are driving buses on a daily basis; teachers are forgoing planning time to fill in for absent colleagues; principals are spending their days in classrooms as teachers. Our staff is overextended and in need of some relief.
For that reason, we’re altering the school schedule in late November:
- Monday, November 22: No school for students; professional development day for licensed staff; work day for classified staff (Previously, this day was an instructional day.)
- Tuesday, November 23: No school for students or staff (Previously, this day was an instructional day.)
- Wednesday, November 24-Friday, November 26: No school
- Monday, November 29: Regular school day for students and staff; A/Odd Day (Previously, this day was a no student/staff professional day.)
The result of the calendar change is one less instructional day in favor of a Wellness Day for our students and staff. While this change may pose a challenge for some, I hope that you will agree that a focus on wellness is needed at this time.
Again, thank you for your continued understanding and support.
Sincerely,
Don Grotting
Superintendent
