Greta Garbo's Life
Greta Garbo, known to her mother and family as Greta Lovisa Gustafsson, came to America when the filming studio MGM took notice of her talent. She filmed several silent movies in the mid to late 1920's, and filmed her first movie with sound in 1930. Greta Garbo was a Swedish immigrant, and gave hope to those who believed there was no way to climb the ladder of success as an immigrant in the United States. She quit school to work in a department store when her father died, and began modeling and acting after that, eventually bringing her into the States.
Greta Garbo in Anna Christina
Being her first film with sound, and it being her voice, she did pretty good. An Academy Award nomination for Best Actress good.
Greta Garbo in Mata Hari
Another of her "talkie" films, Mata Hari was a big box office success.
Greta Garbo in Anna Karenina
Her acting in this movie was said to be her best performance of Greta's whole career.
