HAPPY NEW YEAR TO THOSE CELEBRATING

Dear Richland Families,

It was wonderful to see so many families and staff at Rita’s Celebrity Scoop Night! What beautiful weather for a PTO fundraiser and time for games and company. See pictures of this night and other highlights from last week below.

We look forward to seeing you this Tuesday for Back to School Night. The night will begin at 6:00 in the multipurpose room where we’ll introduce staff, and you’ll get a brief window into Richland and the Leader in Me. Then you’ll be off to your children’s classrooms and can select 6:30 or 7:05 as teachers will share the same presentation at each. You can also sign up to volunteer with our PTO and visit community group tables.

It’s hard to believe we officially move into fall this week! Be sure to save the dates for Picture Day and our PTO sponsored Fall Fest for families. Spirit Wear ordering closes on Wednesday. More details are in this newsletter.

Enjoy your week, and we’ll see you Tuesday night!

HOMEROOM PARENTS AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

WHAT DOES A HOMEROOM PARENT DO?

Every year the PTO recruits parents to help in the homeroom classes.
We especially need fifth grade homeroom parents in Mr. Huber and Mrs. Murphy’s classes.

Responsibilities of Room Parents are outlined below:

- Works with teacher to plan and organize parties/activities (including snacks, games, crafts,
etc. as specified by the teacher).
- Helps recruit parent volunteers for classroom help, activities, class parties, etc.
- Organizes class gifts for the teacher if desired at holidays, end of year, etc.
- Helps with Teacher Appreciation Week in May.

Keep in mind that every teacher has a different classroom with different needs. Some teachers’
needs may differ slightly from the list above. Every Room Parent brings his or her own gifts as
well, so every homeroom will have its own unique Room Parent niche! Complete this form to let us know how you can help.

Can’t be a room parent this year, but still want to help in your child’s classroom?
Just check the box on the form that indicates you’d like to be contacted when the Room Parent needs
volunteers in the classroom (to send in a treat, help at a party, chaperone a field trip, etc.)

WHAT IS LEADER IN ME?

Leader in Me is a philosophy used at our school to promote leadership qualities in our students! Students learn about and practice our 7 habits daily. Those habits are as follows:

  1. Be proactive

  2. Begin with the end in mind

  3. Put first things first

  4. Think win-win

  5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood

  6. Synergize

  7. Sharpen the Saw

What will my child gain from Leader in Me?

Each day at Richland, students are encouraged to show the 7 habits. Students receive lessons focused on showing these habits in all areas of our school. Lessons include teaching students what these ideas look like in each area and practicing what those behaviors look like. Students will continue to receive these types of lessons throughout the year.

What is the Leaderboard?

Each day, adults in the school building have tickets to give to any student they see exhibiting one of the 7 habits. Once a student receives a Leader Ticket, he or she will go to the office to sign our school Leader Book, pick a number at random for the placement of their ticket on the Leaderboard, and will bring home a postcard to show you so that you may share in their good news! Once the student has a ticket on the board, he or she is eligible to receive the "mystery motivator". When ten tickets in a row are up on the board, those students will spin a wheel to receive a mystery motivator prize. Examples of motivators are extra recess, lunch with Dr. Zuerblis, and more.

How can I help from home?

We encourage you to discuss the program with your child at home. The characteristics of the 7 habits encourage responsibility and ownership of one's actions, as well as other leadership qualities. Ask your child to use the ideas shared at school when at home and in the neighborhood, and routinely check in with your child on how he or she is demonstrating these characteristics at school.

THIS WEEK'S DAILY QUESTIONS

Each day, we read a question of the day. We encourage you to continue the conversations at home.

Below are this week's questions. We'd love you to participate!

MONDAY: How would you describe yourself in five words or less?

TUESDAY: What words would you use to describe our school?

WEDNESDAY: What is something you wonder about?

THURSDAY: Would you rather be the boss or the employee?

FRIDAY: If you could give every person in the world a gift, what would it be?
