Harry Potter House Sorting Ceremony in Mr. Howes Classroom
Mr. Howes states, "I have a Harry Potter themed classroom to share my love of reading and Harry Potter with my students. As such, it was important to me that the students were sorted into the four houses that exist at Hogwarts- Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Slytherin and Hufflepuff. I gave a Sorting Test the week before in order to figure out what house each student was in. Before the sorting ceremony, I taught a short lesson on stereotypes- what they are, where they come from and why they can be harmful. I then taught them about the characteristics of witches and wizards in each of the four houses and some common stereotypes of each of the houses. In order to have some "magic" at the ceremony, I put food coloring in the bottom of plastic cups. After it had dried, I covered it with baking soda and added white vinegar to make the "potions" bubble with the color of the house each student had been sorted into."
These pictures capture the excitement and energy in the classroom during this learning activity! Congratulations to Hogwarts newest Wizards!
