AKA Scholarship - $1,000

Xi Tau Omega Chapter was chartered July 16, 1983, in Grandview, Missouri. For close to 38 years, our chapter has proudly served the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Community. One of our major focuses is to promote and support youth development and leadership by helping families and the community access resources and services they may need. We are committed to bringing our time and talents to help youth build good character and citizenship for overall success.

Each year, Xi Tau Omega Chapter awards scholarships to high school and college students for the upcoming school year. This 2021 Scholarship Season, we are offering four (4) scholarships: 1) High Scholastic Achievement Scholarship for high school seniors. 2) Xi Tau Omega HBCU Scholarship for high school seniors. 3) Xi Tau Omega Undergraduate Scholarship. 4) Xi Tau Omega Undergraduate HBCU Scholarship for undergraduates attending a HBCU.

An evaluation board, comprised of distinguished professionals (not affiliated with Xi Tau Omega Chapter) will review and score completed application packets. Incomplete packets will not be evaluated. Scholarship recipients will be notified by May 1, 2021, and recipients will be invited to attend our virtual award celebration in May 2021. Official high school or college transcripts and verification of college enrollment must be provided before awards can be issued.

Descriptions of and eligibility criteria for each scholarship are provided below. Please read carefully.

High Scholastic Achievement Scholarship $1,000 Scholarship Three (3) scholarships to be awarded. The High Scholastic Achievement Scholarship was established in 1993 to assist graduating high school seniors with financing their first year of college. This scholarship is for high school seniors who personify commitment, integrity, and kindness. Xi Tau Omega HBCU Scholarship $1,000 Scholarship This scholarship is designed for graduating seniors who plan to attend an HBCU in the fall of 2021. https://forms.gle/bfyQdPmvUyipMFb28


Xi Tau Omega Undergraduate Scholarship $1,000 Scholarship Three (3) scholarships to be awarded. This scholarship is designed for college students who graduated from a Kansas City Metropolitan high school and is currently enrolled in a four-year institution. https://forms.gle/rL5UJh8yMiRvLsAV7


Xi Tau Omega Undergraduate HBCU Scholarship $1,000 Scholarship This scholarship is designed for college students who graduated from a Kansas City Metropolitan high school and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree at a HBCU. https://forms.gle/58ibSKwxivGEsnmQ6

Angela Pearson Scholarship - $1,000

Deadline to Apply: April 18th - extended to April 25th!


This scholarship is intended for student who are active in community service. It is awarded on the basis of the student's accomplishments and necessary skills to be successful in college and their ability to achieve educational goals. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, and have performed a minimum of 100 hours of community service.

The Angela Pearson Scholarship Fund was established in 1999 with initial donations from John and Ann Ready, Roma Cook, Karen Ros, W.A and Irma Hirsch, Richard and Paula Johnson, Gerard and Martha Mos, Morrison and Heckler LLP, William and Sara Morgan. In 2000 an additional sum was donated to the fund by Mary and Alan Atterbury.


Funds will be disbursed after recipient shows proof of registration to a college. Paid directly to college of choice.

Beth Heide Memorial Scholarship - $1,000

There is no application process for this award.


This was formerly the Principal's Volition Award. While there has been a monetary component, the recipient has always been chosen by the Principal. And funds given directly to the student.

Charles Satterwhite III Athletic Scholarship - $250-500

Deadline to Apply: April 18th - extended to April 25th!


Male and female athletes are eligible. They must have participated in a sport at CHS 3 out of 4 years, including their senior year. They must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, maintain a 95% attendance rate, and have good citizenship. Coach and Faculty letters of recommendation are required. Graduating Senior must also have attended Center School District at least 3 years.

Charles H Satterwhite III was a student at Center High School. He was involved in the Football program, and unfortunately lost his life while playing football at our stadium. His parents started this scholarship, and Laura & Paul Howells have graciously decided to keep the tradition going by funding the grant.


Scholarship will be paid directly to student upon proof of enrollment in trade school, post-secondary education, or enlistment in military service.

Colleen McAdams Scholarship - $250

No application, recipient determined during their 8th grade year at CMS.


Recipient must exhibit good character and high academic performance. The recipient is determined by the CMS Principal and Administrative Team during their 8th grade year. Scholarship will be disbursed upon the recipient's graduation from Center High School.


Colleen McAdams was a valued and loyal employee of the Center School District. She was a teacher, coach, and counselor at Center Middle School. Unfortunately she lost her battle with cancer in 2010. This scholarship was established to honor her memory and dedication to Center School District.


Funds will be given directly to student.

David A. Leone Athletic Scholarship - $1,000

Application Deadline: April 18th - extended to April 25th!


This scholarship is available to student athletes who attend either CHS or CAS and exhibit the following characteristics:



-Work ethic

-Care for friends

-Respectful to others

-Goes above and beyond

-Does not have to maintain high GPA

-Tremendous teammate

-Athlete that has worked very hard

-An unsung hero

-Does not have to be going to college to play sports

Marjorie Love Fund Scholarship Application Sponsored by the Kansas City Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution - $500

Deadline to Apply: April 18th - extended to April 25th!


The Marjorie Love Fund Scholarship supports one of the DAR three mission areas: Historic preservation, Education, or Patriotism.


Female students may apply by completing the application below, and submitting a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor, and an essay on one of the mission areas listed above.

Don Shaffer Leadership Scholarship - $500

No application process. Award given at Mr. May, the Band Director's discretion.


The Don Shaffer Leadership Award is intended to be awarded to a graduating Senior Band member seeking to attend college in particular pursuit of a Music Education or Music Performance Degree. If no such candidate exists, Seniors pursuing other Fine Arts or Education degrees will be considered.


Don Shaffer was the Director of Bands for Center School District for many years, teaching Band at every level throughout his career. This scholarship was established by Charles Holton, an outstanding Center Band member who received this and the Sousa Award in 1976.


Funds will be disbursed after recipient shows proof of registration to a college. Paid directly to college of choice.

John T. Belcher Scholarship - $300

Deadline to Apply: Determined each year by the Board of Education.


Awarded to a graduating Senior who has a strong GPA and ACT scores. Must write an essay on some aspect of public education . Topic to be determined each year by Missouri School Board Association.


Funds will be disbursed after recipient shows proof of registration to a college. Paid directly to college of choice.

CSD Credit Union Scholarship (formerly Heartland Community Credit Union) - $500

Deadline to Apply: April 18th - extended to April 25th!


Funded by Heartland Community Credit Union and available to two graduating seniors in honor of two Center High School Teachers, Mr. Ken Angell and Mr. Dan Creasy.

Nage L. Damas Memorial Scholarship - $1,000

No application in the past. Chosen by Athletic Director and Wrestling Coach


Nage L. Damas was a member of the graduating class of 1969. He was an outstanding scholar athlete who played football and wrestled, but wresting was his passion. Nage Placed 3rd in State in wrestling his senior year. He went on to the United States Military Academy at West Point where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus in math and engineering. He was captain of the wrestling team at West Point and his love for wrestling took him all the way to the Olympic trials.


Mr. Damas passed away in May 2015 and a memorial fund was set up in his honor to be awarded to an outstanding student athlete, preferably a wrestler.


Need to double check where the funds are coming from.

The Owen and Mary Sue O’Leary ELL Scholarship - $

Deadline to Apply: April 18th - extended to April 25th!


This scholarship was established in memory of Owen and Mary Sue O’Leary who greatly valued education.


The scholarship is designed to recognize deserving Center High School graduates who have been or are currently ELL students in the Center school district. Regardless of citizenship status, qualified applicants can receive assistance for tuition at an accredited institution. Candidates must demonstrate academic achievement with a GPA of 2.5 and be involved in service work. For consideration, applicants must submit an essay on an assigned topic, two letters of recommendation, a high school transcript, evidence of service work, and an acceptance letter from an accredited institution (copy of email acceptance letter is acceptable). Recipients must demonstrate a strong commitment to pursuing a post-secondary certificate or degree from an accredited institution. Extenuating circumstances can be taken into account. This scholarship is renewable.


Eligibility:

-CHS seniors who are currently or have been ELL students in the Center School District

-Scholarship applicants must have plans to continue their education at an accredited institution in 2021-2022.


Eligible students must submit an application cover sheet, two letters of reference, and essay by April 17, 2021.

Letters of reference

Two letters of reference (not longer than one page and signed) from teachers, principals, counselors, or other educational professionals must be submitted with the application cover sheet and essay.


Essay topic

The student’s essay should completely address the following prompt:

-To what do you attribute your success in school?

-What challenges have you faced as an English language learner and how have you addressed those challenges?

The essay should be typed with a minimum of 500 words, and no more than three pages in length, double-spaced. The essay must have the student’s name on all pages. The essay must be submitted with a completed Application Cover Sheet.

Red Bridge Lions & Lionesses/ SGA Scholarship - $ Varies

Deadline to Apply: These scholarships are not available for the 20-21 school year and will resume for the 21-22 school year.

Renee Art Scholarship - $500

Deadline to Apply: April 18th - extended to April 25th!


Renee P. Art was a graduate of Center High School Class of 2010. She played soccer while attending the high school. She went on to college in Pella Iowa at Central College and earned her education degree. Her emphasis was to teach middle school math. She taught two years at Hogan Middle School and one year at Brookside Charter. Renee was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the end of 2013. She battled this for four years and passed in 2017.


Criteria:


1. Male of Female soccer players who have participated 2 out of 4 seasons.

2. Must have participated in soccer their senior year.

3. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

4. Maintain 90% or higher attendance.

5. Show they have been involved in some kind of community service.

6. Must be a Center High School senior who attended Center School District at least 3 years.

7. Interested in attending college with the desire to study education, math, science, or technology.


For consideration, minimum one-page essay with 3 letters of recommendation must be submitted.


Mr. & Mrs. Art will select the student to be awarded the scholarship.
