Fourth Grade Parkside Elementary
November 16th - November 20th
Math Focus
This week in math we will be continue to focus on 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication. The students have learned 2 distinct strategies: The break apart or house method and the open array strategy. Create a 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication problem and have your child teach you these two methods. Both methods demonstrate an understanding of distributive property, which will be tested on the end of grade test. Nest week, students will have the opportunity to learn the standard algorithm if they so choose. Furthermore, they will continue practice with multiplication word problems. We will have a quick mini-check (quiz) for multiplication on Wednesday. Then we will move into division. Make sure your child is practicing their basic math facts. Knowing these facts will help them be successful the rest of the year. Click on the following link for an example of the open array strategy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExZ1G3j4sf8
English Language Arts (Literacy/ Reading)
Informational Text/ nonfiction is our focus for the remainder of second quarter. The past two weeks we worked on introductions to informational text- articles, advertisements (anyone get pressured into buying Dannon yogurt lately?), biographies and speeches. When viewing and reading informational texts be sure to make assumptions about the author, think about the targeted audience, look for text features to help understand the text, and decide the purpose. We are moving into context clues- determining an unknown word’s meaning.
Students should be reading nightly and completing assigned reading logs. Fiction and Nonfiction books should be brought home to school daily.
