Notre Dame Catholic Primary School
Foundations for Life Long Learning August 8
Ever generous God,
You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop
To live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and constant in bringing hope and encouragement to those who were disheartened, lonely or needy.
With confidence in your generous providence
and through the intercession of Saint Mary MacKillop we ask that you grant our request……………….
We ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit
so that we too, like Mary MacKillop, may live with courage, trust and openness.
Ever generous God hear our prayer.
We ask this through Jesus Christ. Amen.
Dear Parents and Staff
On 17 October 2010 Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed Mary McKillop’s sainthood at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. St Mary of the Cross, as she is now known, is the first Australian Saint and today, 8 August, is her Feast Day, the day upon which she died in 1909. Mary was born on 15 January 1842 in Fitzroy, Melbourne. At 18 years of age she moved to Penola in South Australia to work as the governess for her aunt and uncle’s children and it was here that she started her work with the poor and marginalised. In 1866, along with Father Julian Woods, the local Parish Priest, she founded the Sisters of St Joseph and in 1867 the Rule of Life for the Sisters was instigated. According to this Rule, the Sisters were to:
1. Live poorly, owning nothing in their own right
2. Depend on Divine Providence for their subsistence
3. Go wherever they were needed
4. Do all the good they could, and never see an evil without trying to remedy it.
In 1866 Mary and two of her sisters, Annie and Lexie, opened a Catholic school in Penola which was open to all who wanted to attend, whether Catholic or not. On 15 August 1867 Mary pronounced her religious vows and made her final profession on 8 December 1869.
Mary was very dedicated to her vows, her teaching and her work with the poor, and, even though she was excommunicated in 1871, always maintained her devotion to the Rule of Life that had been set. She was, and is, a guiding light for all of us to follow in holding true to our beliefs and the rights of all to justice and fulfilment.
DISCO
Congratulations to our wonderful P&F who provided the Disco for the children last Friday evening. Although I was unable to attend, I have heard that the children had a great time and that there were many very innovative dance styles on display. One of our school families kindly donated a Google Mini device for us to raffle as a door prize which we did at last Friday’s Year 1M Assembly. Fittingly Alyssa Arias from Year 1M was the winner and I am sure she and her family will enjoy using their excellent prize.
BOOK WEEK
Mrs Sarmardin has a range of activities planned for the children to complete during our Book Week celebrations with the highlight our Parade on Wednesday morning. I look forward to seeing the clever and innovative costumes that parents and children come up with. This year I’m particularly interested in what the staff will wear to let everyone know that “Reading is their Secret Power”.

YR 5 CLASS NEWS
Busy? Did someone say busy? We are really rocking in Year Five and there isn’t a minute spare in our days, we are so busy learning.
Our main focus this Term is on sustainability. The Year Fives have become Waste Wise Warriors! Twice a week Year Five students collect the Crunch & Sip scraps from each classroom to feed our worms. Yes, you read that right. We have a worm farm! It is behind the library in our garden area. All classes are welcome to visit the garden and see the worm farm in action.
The worms use their tiny teeth to chew up the Crunch & Sip scraps and turn them into “worm wee” and fertiliser that can be used on gardens. The Year Fives, along with the Year Six Environmental Council, are planning to harvest the “worm wee” and sell it to the school community. If you have any spare milk bottles (with lids) please bring them in and give them to Brother Stephen.
We have even designed logos to use on special labels for our “worm wee”. Just like a bottle of fertiliser from Bunnings, only ours will be 100% natural! Here are some of the logos we designed.
Keep a look out for the Year Five Waste Wise Warriors around the school. We are in training to fight the world’s waste problem.
