Science Fun Day: Volunteers Wanted

I am the 5th grade teacher representative, and we are beginning our planning of the highly anticipated Science Fun Day. Although the date is far away (Friday, May 1, 2015), there is much to be accomplished prior to that day.

We are asking all parents, Kindergarten - 6th Grade, who are interested in volunteering to join us at 6:00 pm in the Titus Dining Room on Wednesday, January 14th, for our first meeting. We will provide you with an overview of the day, brainstorm ideas among grade levels, and answer any questions that you may have.

If you are interested in volunteering on Friday, May 1st, even if you can not make the meeting on January 14th, please sign up here with the corresponding grade levels. Thank you in advance for your dedication to making this day a success!

We are learning...

Math

When we return from break, we will be continuing Unit #5 - Fractions. This unit includes finding equivalent fractions, comparing/ordering fractions, converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and adding and subtracting fractions, Multiplication and division fact fluency is important in this unit. I encourage your child to practice their math facts over break!

Students should be reviewing their math facts through the use of XtraMath (www.xtramath.org) in order to reach mastery of all functions!

There will also be TenMarks (www.tenmarks.com) lessons available.

Reading

We will be finishing up our second Theme Unit: Seeking the Unknown in the week(s) following winter break. The children will complete an inquiry project where the research a topic connected to this theme. Our reading strategy focus has been summarizing, and distinguishing between fact and opinion.

*A great website to visit to practice summarizing skills is "Into the Book." Students can create their own usernames (I recommend they write them down!), and practice their reading strategies and skills with various games to play. Many have already gotten started in computer lab.

Writing & Spelling

In writing, we have begun our informative unit. The children are brainstorming topics and ideas. They are switching gears from story format to very organized detailed paragraphs.

Our current grammar focus is plural noun rules.

Spelling Update: Each week's spelling list can be found here!

This site is also listed under the Language Arts tab on my website.

Social Studies

We just completed Chapter 7: The Original 13 Colonies, and will more onto Chapter 8: Slavery.
