A note from the Principal
August 23,2016
Welcome back to the 2016-2017 school year. The school year is officially underway and you can just feel that this will be a great one. As you are aware, we have changed our school times this year, which has allowed us to add more time to the instructional day.
Kindergarten
AM: 9:15am -12:15pm
PM: 1:05pm - 4:05pm
1st - 4th Grade
9:15am - 4:15pm
A FEW IMPORTANT REMINDERS TO KEEP THE DAY RUNNING SMOOTHLY:
The building opens for K-4 student arrival at 8:55am. Please do not drop your child off before this time as there is no supervision.
Parent Drop Off
Two Options in the AM:
- Parents may choose to walk their child into school. You will park in the front parking lot and walk across the crosswalk.
- Parents may choose to drop child off at the front door. Staff member will direct traffic. Please do not try to pass cars as this is a single-file lane. We will try to wave cars quickly through, but please help our efforts by making your goodbye quick. If you choose to drop off, please stay in your vehicle, so we can keep the lines moving quickly. Traffic lines can be long in the morning so by everyone following these directions, it will ensure the speed and safety that is needed.
One Option for PM Kindergarten:
- PM Kindergarten parents may begin lining up outside of the front doors beginning at 12:55pm. At approximately 1:00pm, our Kindergarten teachers will come to the front doors to pick up the students.
- Please do not drop your students off unless you see his/her teacher at the door.
- If you arrive after 1:05pm, you will need to enter the building with your child and sign him/her in at the front office.
Breakfast
Breakfast will be served Monday-Friday from 8:55 - 9:10 for students. Please check website for menu and prices.
Students coming to school after 9:05 will not be able to enter the cafeteria due to time constraints. If you are running late, please make sure your child has something to carry them through to lunch.
Tardy Bell
Class starts each day at 9:15 at which time the tardy bell will ring. Students must be in the classroom at this time or they will be considered tardy to school. It is important to us that your child doesn’t miss the beginning of the school day as many times this can make them feel like they are rushed.
Lunch and Recess:
We are trying something new this year after much discussion and planning last year. We will be switching our lunch and recess times. The blocks of time will remain the same. Instead of students going to lunch first and then recess, we will be allowing them to go out to recess first, followed by lunch. This has many benefits, but will take some time building a smooth routine. Please be patient as we work through this process, but feel free to provide feedback.
Dismissal
We have a routine for each dismissal that takes place in the building, so students can arrive home safely each day.
If you need to change your child’s dismissal route, please send in a handwritten notice. We will not change plans if a child tells us that they are supposed to go home a different way.
Bus Riders
PLSD has a bus contract with Petermann Transportation : The district has provided an easy way for you to check your child’s bus as well as check the tracking system through the website. If you have questions with transportation, please call 614-837-8525.
Parent Pick Up:
We will be providing all parent pickups with two cards. Upon your arrival, please pass a card to the teacher on duty. They will go into the building and bring your child out to you. If you do not have your card, you will be asked to provide identification. (This will take longer, so please try to keep the school provided card in a handy spot) We open the doors at 4:00. You will not need to get in line until this time.
Common Assessments and STAR diagnostics tests will be administered to students over the next two weeks. These assessments provide us with valuable information about your child’s strengths and weaknesses. This gives teachers a good starting point so that instruction can be tailored to students’ needs. Please make sure they provide their best effort.

PTO Butter Braid Fundraiser! Order forms were sent home with students on Monday, 8/22. This is a new BACK TO SCHOOL Fundraiser our PTO is trying this year. They have lots of yummy Pastries that you are sure to love. Please return order forms and payment on Tuesday, Sept. 6th. (We kindly ask that you do not return order forms before this date, as the PTO Volunteers will not be available to begin counting until then. Thank you!)
CommUNITY Fair - A celebration of the diversity and cultures of Pickerington Schools! Art, education, food trucks, performances and much more fun for the whole family! Please join us this Saturday, August 27th from 10am - 2pm at Pickerington High School Central.
