Claxton 5th Grade MLK Day of Service

Our annual 5th grade MLK Day of Service will take place on Friday, January 18. On this day, fifth grade students will go out into our community and complete service projects in honor of Dr. King's vision for our world.

We are looking for adult volunteers to help with the following:

1. Chaperoning 5th graders on the service projects. These will be at about 5-6 locations that are currently being confirmed, such as Haywood Street Congregation and Asheville Greenworks. Every site will have faculty/staff chaperones, but we will also need parent chaperones to support them. Timing would be 8:45am-11:45am (chaperones will get their site assignments, and buses will load around 9am).

2. Donating food/drinks for the meal component. We will have a breakfast with a guest speaker and the breakfast will be catered by J&S Cafeteria for hot food items, but we’ll need your help for supplementing these items.

Please let us know if you are interested in participating in this important event or if you have any questions. You can reach us by email at and Sign up to volunteer for our MLK Service Day at

We appreciate your help!

Many thanks!

Kelly Lytle and Amanda Van Cleve

Girls on the Run Spring 2019 & Volunteer Coach Opportunity

We are looking for parents and community members who are interested in serving as volunteer coaches for a 3rd-5th grade Girls on the Run (GOTR) program at Claxton in Spring 2019! Our sessions will be held on Tuesday and Thursdays after school beginning in early March and running through mid-May. You don't need to be a runner to be a coach! If you'd like to learn more, visit for a short video which is followed by written info about GOTR coaching. Contact Claxton's Volunteer Coordinator at if you're interested in being a part of Claxton's coaching team!

Serving as a Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year

Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer!

Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule.

All trainings are held at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.

The full ACS Volunteer Training Schedule for 2018-2019 is linked here. Dates coming soon include--
