MLK Day
On Monday, January 18th we recognized Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with no school for students. Last week, we honored Dr. King through a school assembly on Thursday. In class we watched "Our Friend Martin," and created a flip book to learn more about the amazing things he did during the Civil Rights Movement. Check out the video we watched below.

Social Studies
In social studies we have been learning about the different landforms we have in the United States. We have learned about rivers, lakes oceans, islands, valleys, mountains, plains and the desert. Last week we talked about what characteristics make of up each of these landforms and where we can find them in the United States.
During the next unit in social studies students will be learning about community helpers and how communities change over time. This unit will lead into our next project as we prepare for Expo in March. You can expect more information about our project in the next couple weeks!
Writing
In preparation for our next project, we are going to pause our narrative writing unit to begin our opinion writing unit. We will begin the unit by defining the difference between fact and opinion and looking at the structure of opinion writing by using examples as our mentor text. The narrative writing unit will pick up again after Expo is complete.
Literacy Centers
Last week, we had our new literacy center activities in full swing! Check out the pictures to see what we are doing. This week during reading workshop we will be continuing to study characters of books by making predictions about their wants and problems, asking ourselves, "what would I do if I had this problem?" and learning to revise our predictions as we move forward.

Pack for a Purpose
We are continuing to collect school supplies and toothbrushes for "Pack for a Purpose." Serenity and her family will be traveling to Mexico over the February break to bring these items to school children there. Our goal is to collect 100 toothbrushes so that each student in the school can receive one.
